So I'm looking for advice from someone in the know! At the moment I have a very inefficient gas fire with boiler! So my question is whether or not I can replace the boiler with a boiler stove and basically remove the gas heating totally and heat my house solely with boiler stove

Yes it's possible. It depends on the piping layout to start with. But be aware, solid fuel is probably the dearest form of heating unless you have acess to cheap firewood.
Have you thought about installing a new gas boiler with heating controls?

I'd be putting the in the same place as current boiler so all pipework is in place! I want to put a stove in anyway but to put the stove in I need to take out gas fire with boiler and I don't want to put in new gas boiler and stove if I don't have to! plus the installation cost is an issue

Just because there's pipes there dosent mean they're suitable for a solid fuel installation. The pipes MUST BE 1" copper. The flow must rise constantly to the cylinder on a gravity circuit. Neither flow or return can have any type of valve or pump on it between the stove and the cylinder. If these guidelines are met and the chimney is suitable then it should be ok to do.

If cost is an issue, the safest thing is really to get a good gas boiler. When you factor everything in (transport and disposal especially) it is hard to heat less expensively than gas. It is also reliable and convenient.

There are a lot of complicated issues with plumbing properly for solid fuel. It isn't just the cost of the stove. You might feel like you would have been better buying shares in a copper mine by the time you have set the whole thing up.
