Marty Whelan and Van Morrison

The long-running Marty thread has been closed it seems but did any of you Marty-sufferers catch the review last week in The Irish Times relating a bizarre guest-appearance by Mart at Van's gig in the Olympia? My mind did a full 360 degree boggle as I read that Marty had gone onstage (presumably at Van's invitation) to recite the lyrics to 'Madame George'! I quote here from the review:

"After telling a rather charming story about an improbable meeting with Morrison at the Rose of Tralee, he reads Madame George. When the tapestry of Morrison’ s music is hung on them, the lyrics hold a mystery; decoupled, they sound bare and exposed.
Whelan’s insistence on reading the lyrics in their repetitious entirety does them no favours. “Say goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye to Madame George/ Dry your eye for Madame George/ Wonder why for Madame George/ The love’s to love the love’s to love the love’s to love...” he intones, with the dead-serious air of a schoolboy."

Makes one think, is Marty's Lyric programme Van's preferred morning listening? And the very thought of Mr Whelan declaiming the lyrics of Madame George!!! Ay Caramba!!!
