Doubt anyone is running them commercially in the south, seen them while in New Zealand and was very impressed

Romney marsh and NZ Romney are 2 different breeds at this stage. I have seen Billy O Kane"s sheep and was impressed. There are other variants like the Highlanders which might also be worth a look but I cant remember the mans name that breeds them. The fleece on the NZ Romney looks very heavy that might be an issue. 1000 ewes and no help the Romney have a serious advantage. Billy O Kane recently won Farmers weekly beef farmer of the year.

Old thread , but anyone see them on country file tonight ? Adam Henson is using a nz Romney to build up a flock of reduced labour intensive sheep. Nice looking ran he had. How's people getting on with them here or anyone have them ?

Scanned mostly singles compared to mule ewe lambs which are nearly all scanned twins

I bought 10 NZ romney ewes with 20 lambs in the UK a few yrs back. Kept all the lambs. Put the ram lambs on good belclare and lleyn ewes and the result im very happy with. Produced really tough easily managed ewes that are very good mothers. Ive 6PB rams left atm and will try get as many ewe lambs from them as i can. Defo worth a try really nice sheep to work with

The Romney/Belclare crosses scanned well about 1.85 i would say. Just had a look there now and there is'nt many singles only 6/7 out of 40ish

How did the Romneys work out this lambing season razor or Stan ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭stantheman1979

Yeah they did well. Have a good few Romney x belclare ewe lambs tagged to keep. They are very easy managed in fairness to them

Delighted with them so far. Very maternal and excellent attentive mothers. Even seen a few standing over lambs when raining. Here's a few pictures

Do ye reckon their more easier managed or better then the other breeds of maternal ewes like a llyen or the mule ? Would ye be tempted to drop your other maternal breeds in favour of them ?
Do they cross well with any other breeds in particular ?

Bit early for making that kind of decision. need to see how they perform over a few years But so far so good. Still a little concerned they may not be as prolific as my mules.

What percentage did you average out with after?

I'm only lambing them down as hoggets so hard to judge prolificy yet. So far I'm very happy with them, some of singles lambs won't be about to long

    Selling any ewe lambs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭stantheman1979

I've 500 ewe lambs marked as possible replacements. There is a good share of Romney X in them. Any that don't make the cut will be for sale. I'll probably have 3yo Pb Romney rams for sale later on also. They won't be given away tho ha ha
