Young and energetic are not adjectives I'd particularly associate with Prince Charles

Big Ears put the bet down I'd say, he's gonna do a pillow over the head job on her to make sure he cashes out.

All this based on bookies suspending bets on her abdicating because someone in the Windsor area placing a "large bet" of £200 prompting fears of insider knowledge.

If I had insider knowledge and was one of the queens confidants I'd be placing a much larger bet than 200 quid!

Sounds a bit tenuous, must be a slow news day, not that I care what she does.

No bookie would suspend betting after a £200 bet on a 3-1 shot.

Article is from December according to the Torygraph.
A Royal source told the Telegraph: "If the Queen was going to make a major announcement, she wouldn't do it in a pre-recorded speech that is shown in the South Pacific Commonwealth realms several hours before it is shown here.

"It would mean the end of her reign would officially be announced in Tuvalu, rather than in London. So no, it's not true."

She's (quick google) 267 days away from Queen Vic's record for longest serving British monarch. No way is she going willingly before then.

Also, she's (apparently) a firm believer in her being appointed through divinity and therefore believes she should be monarch for life.

    TL/DR she's going exactly nowhere.

In news that I'm sure hardly anyone will care about, it looks like QE2 is gonna step down this Christmas.

She's been pretty quiet my entire life, so I wonder what a younger more energetic monarch will be like for the UK.

Betting suspended over a £200 bet? Seems a bit far-fetched.

Besides, Liz is less than a year short of Victoria's British record.

apparently she told Prince Phillip "I want to break free"

Charles must be fuming. Imagine waiting 48 years for a promotion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭maxwell smart

If anyone in Windsor was going to use insider knowledge and put a large wedge of cash on a sure thing it would be Lizzie herself. And I reckon she would put at least 500 down.

Maybe she is hanging on until the 31st as she has the lot on a spread bet with Paddy Power?

There are a lot of closet crown lovers in this country! A 2015 coronation would be one of the top tv moments on irish tv.

They most certainly would on a market such as this.

I don't know any bookie that would even take 200 off some randomer on a market like that.

Not necessarily, there are still rumblings ongoing. A month or so ago, there was a rash of articles in Teh Grauniad (and poss. elsewhere) about Prince Charles, such as "What kind of King will Charles III be?". (Note the language - "will" and "when", no "ifs" or "buts" about it.) For starters, he probably won't be "Charles III", not after the unpopularity of the previous King Charlies (the first was executed, his son was a closet Catholic who had left no heirs but sired at least a dozen illegitimate children). More likely he'll be King George VII, after his grandfather. But I do think that a multitude of little things are pointing in the general direction of abdication.

Queen Elizabeth would never abdicate the throne. She is queen for life and rightly so.
The same was said about Edward VIII, but then he had the unmitigated temerity to propose marriage to an American double divorcee... "there's the door, sir".

Times have changed, of course, and Charles is a divorcee married to a divorcee. While that is no longer seen as an obstacle to his reign, not everyone is happy with that for "moral" reasons. There's also a strong perception that Charles is an atheist, albeit one who thinks that religion is a good way of controlling the "common people". He wishes to be known as a generic "Defender of Faiths" rather than "Defender of the Faith" - "the Faith" in there being Church of England.

The most interesting rumour I've heard, though, is that the Queen approached Prince William with the idea of bypassing Charles entirely ... but William said "no", because he wants to concentrate on his young family before the full weight of the crown lands on his head. Hmmm.
