could a "software upgrade" fix this problem

I bought a Galaxy Alpha in the first weeks of it launch.

Since then I think I have missed more calls than I habe in the last 10 years of mobile ownership, despite living and working in/near Dublin city centre.

I firstly complained to 3 who told me to change the sim as I may have damaged it when I cut it down.
I have brought the phone back twice now, first time the Samsung store changed the settings so I was on the better 3 network, made 0 difference, second time they gave me a new sim card - a proper one this time, not a cut down but again it made no difference, and yesterday I dropped it in finally sick of the fact I missed 6 calls over the weekend, and received some texts 2 days after they were sent.
They rang me today to say it was fixed, I asked him had they found fault with it but he said no, all they had done was a software upgrade and it was now to Samsung standards !
could this upgrade help ? to be honest I am reluctant to use it as I am missing calls with it and don't thrust it anymore.

I would like to point out I am with 3 for years and never had this issue before in either an iphone or previous Galaxy S3 and my better half isn't having this issue at all.(S4)

    thanks for your thoughts....
