Worst On-Hold Music

I'm on hold with Revenue and Für Elise is driving me demented.

Who has the worst on hold music?
For me it used to be Bank Of Ireland's woeful snippit of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, absolute hell over a phone line.

I think companies deliberately play the same 15 seconds of hellish music, occasionally interspersed with your call is important to us which is why we're going to keep you on hold for another hour messages, in order to get you to hang up without them having to deal with your issue.

The Strawman Argument

Eircom used to have a version of Orinoco Flow that kept cutting out and was way louder than the people were so you kept getting deafened when they swapped over to the on hold music. I absolutely love Orinoco Flow but it was insufferable, almost as if they wanted you to be as aggressive to their staff as possible.

I used to work in an accountant's office and I spent hours listening to that dreadful version of Fur Elise.

The one I hate the most is Air New Zealand (or the hold music they had when I lived in NZ). I used to have to call them loads for work and it was this weird pretend Maori song about homecoming or something - used to drive me mad!

I can't remember what company it was but in the past few months I was on hold for about 15 minutes with someone. They had Fur Elise but only played about 20 seconds before looping it. It was rage-inducing.

I once worked in an office where the Office Manager was obsessed with Celine Dion's Falling into You album, and consequently had that on a CD player hooked up to the phone system as hold music.

Even now, I get a small bit ill thinking of it.

Well that is just catchy. I accidentally listened to it for a good five minutes there feeling all mellow and chilled out.

I think the worst is when they have no hold music at all. Minutes of listening to nothing and checking that you haven't been cut off every 30 seconds.

Couple of years ago I spent the whole day avoiding hearing the results of a sporting event so I could watch it when I went home. 10 minutes before finishing work I was on hold with a local security company and they had 2fm as their hold music, didn't even cop what I was listening to until the presenter blurted out the result.

Yuck. That's the one we have in work to go with our Cisco phones. I got put on hold on an internal call in work once and I nearly barfed into my receiver!
