You can possibly claim for the part of this year which you didn't not work ie if you ceased work in November you may be due to get a refund as your tax credits are usually spread out monthly or week.

If you worked for all of 2013 and previous years then there is nothing to claim back provided your tax was calculated correctly.
Either way you can only get Revenue to re-check the past 4 years.

Would I get a bigger refund if I was to leave at the start of a year as oposed to the end of a year?

Its hard to say without seeing all the facts and figures but here are three scenarios:

    1. If you finish work on 31/1/15, you will have paid tax for one month so you would probably get most if not all of it back (probably a small amount of tax)

    2. If you finish work on 30/11/15, you will only have one months tax credits which are unused. When your tax is recalculated you will have only a small amount of tax to claim back (smaller than the amount in one)

    3. If you finish work on 30/06/15, you will only have 6 months tax credits which are unused. However you will probably have paid half of the total tax for the year at this stage and you should be able to claim most if not all of it back.

So based on the above I would think you would get the most back if you work for 5/6 months of the year but this is a very simplistic way of looking at it. I don't think I would let it affect my decision as to when I finish work and move to Oz.

    Best of luck down under
