Lens question (gift ideas!)

    Hi,

My dad has started photography the past few years. He likes taking action photos of like golf (he play golf) :)

He has a canon eos 40d class.

I know feck all about cameras but was thinking of getting him something for the camera for christmas. Hoping to spend about 80 euro or so.

Are there any decent lenses at that price that would be decent for taking action shots (this is potentially a stupid question :D). What about ones with a good zoom, so he can be far away?

Alternatively he was talking ages ago about a flash gun - would I get a decent one at that sort of price?

Or does anyone have any other ideas of things that would be really useful for a very amateur hobbyist who usually takes golf action shots or else posed pictures of groups of people?

    Thanks for any help! :)

Do you know what lens he currently uses?

The only lens around that price range would be a 50mm 1.8f. That would still be around the €100 mark.

There are a few ideas posted on the Berminghams site here - http://berminghamcameras.ie/50-100/

If you see something you think he may like, post back here with questions! (I wouldn't bother with the filter kits listed.. if he's into action these aren't something he'd use).

Do you have any photos that he took with the camera? We may be able to get some information about the lens from that.

I am sure I could find some. Would it work if they were uploaded to the likes of facebook or does that strip out the metadata of the image?

Not sure about Facebook but for example Picasa, Google Plus or Flickr keep the metadata.

I can't open the link on my PC (blocked by the company). I opened it on my phone but it seems that all the camera info has been stripped out.

.....and that would be a great lense to get him if he hasn't got it. It may be a bit short for sports but he'll surely enjoy it.

You're not going to get much of a lens for 80 euro tbh, especially if you're looking for a zoom. The 50mm 1.8 is the cheapest lens Canon make but that's really more of a portrait lens. You might get a second hand zoom online for around 100 euro.

for that budget you can get him Canon Zoom Lens Mug Cup. It looks like L lens but its a mug! i think you can find them for 15-20 euro.
