I've yet to use google drive to backup files and photos and stuff. Is it OK in terms of security? What's the free usage limit?

I trust it for what it is, something that stores my data. I definitely don't put "secure" information up there unencrypted, but I don't see much issue with the reputable providers.

I'm in the process of setting up a small (4tb) cloud server at home. I want to make sure that any transfers are sufficently secure, as well as the drive itself.

If anyone is interest, it's a WD mycloud.

Just a note on any local cloud system, if you can access it from outside your own LAN it's routing your files through a webserver somewhere.

This can of course be done securely and privately, but unless you are required to setup a strong password while setting up the device and consequently must enter that password into any 'app' to access your the files you can almost certainly say it's not secure and isn't much more secure than using a Cloud service.

The reason I say that is, if the files aren't encrypted by the storage/cloud device before it leaves the device, then the files are passing through the webserver unencrypted and can be access by the manufacturer if they ever choose to.
Even having a per-user password probably isn't enough protection as the user account details will most likely be stored on the webserver so that authentication can be done seamlessly from outside the LAN.

Yeah if you use the WD cloud login thingy then it goes through their system and is quite slow.

I'm hoping to set up SSH/SFTP and be able to access things that way. Now I think of it, there's no encryption option on the drive at all :/
