A major emergency operation was launched this morning after the aircraft, flight number AFR733 flying from the Dominican Republic to CDG in Paris, declared Mayday after a fire warning in the forward cargo hold and asked to divert to Shannon.

Shannon and Ennis fire brigade units as well as the airport's own and NAS ambulances deployed to Shannon, Rescue 115 (Shannon) was tasked and Rescue 117 (Waterford) deployed to Cork Airport on standby while Kilrush lifeboat was launched on the Shannon.

The plane landed safely and upon inspection of the hold no fire was discovered. It's surmised a cargo of vegetables, specifically peppers, set off the alarm.

Heat from peppers thought to have set off fire alarm in plane en route to Paris

It was the third time this year that vegetables and flowers forced flights to divert to Shannon after fire alarms went off.

lots more info on this one on the Flightradar24 Thread .....

I hear it coming in on 24 but couldn't see it because of low cloud ..... able to ID it on FR 24 and later saw the AF 320 that was sent over to pick up the passengers (so I'm now told) ....

How the hell do pepper set off a fire alarm?
    On a plane apparently.

There must have been a strong odour from them. I suppose it is similiar to domestic/ commercial smoke detectors in buildings, dust and paint fumes can activate these ones.

Yup. Deodorants used in cabin toilets can set off the fire alarm

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.
