Do any fee paying schools like
Blackrock offer scholarships (ie education free from fees) to outstanding 12/13 year olds?

I thought they do. Sometimes they see a lad from youths or a smaller Rugby school and he ends in in a big Rugby school.

Not just in Leinster but in Munster also.

Didn't Donnacha O'Callaghan, Denis Leamy get scholarships?

Players often move in 5th or 6th year and rumors are thrown around but i think in reality they just move for a better chance at winning a cup and maybe a provincial contract.

One lad left my school to go to a better rugby school. That school wouldn't normally accept new students in 5th year but he got in partly because of his rugby. He still paid fees and I don't think he even got a starting place in the team.

James Coughlan got a scholarship to study/play at Christian Brothers, Cork.

Pretty sure St Gerrards were giving rugby scholarships a few years ago but stand to be corrected.

There is every year a couple of talented rugby players who move school for rugby purposes. It happens in all provinces not just Munster and Leinster.
Donncha O Callaghan was in CBC from first year.

Some move and get reduction on fee's. The schools cups get the media attention and its not a better chance at winning a cup its the chance to be seen by more provincial coaches etc..

    First years, unlikely.

    Older boys, some, not all.

On the assumption that the pupil's parents are taxpayers, taxpayers pay ALL of the fees!

Yes is the simple answer and as stated previously it is nationwide and not confined to Dublin or indeed Leinster. It may put a young lad ahead in a que for eligibilty to a school or it may mean no fees or reduced fees but certainly know of 3 schools one in Dublin, Kildare & Munster doing this and heard of 6 or 7 others as well. It does happen but is more a discresionary offer than an advertised offer

No, 12 and 13 year olds don't get scholarships from any school. What would be the point in possibly wasting scholarships on kids that young when the school can just wait until 4th or 5th Year and poach them then when they're sure they're good players?
