Toilet Cistern fills slowly

    Hi all,

I have uploaded a video to youtube of my toilets cistern. Link here:

(Sorry you will have to paste in the URL without the space as boards is denying my link posting.)

    ww w.youtube. com/watch?v=vYp5-Ux1hPc&feature=youtu.be

Essentially it drip fills the 6 litre cistern and takes over an hour to do so. This makes things awkward when people are over. Can anyone advise if I can DIY this? I have no experience but have a multitool at the ready.

If not does anyone have advice to not get ripped off by a plumber as it seems like it should be a quick fix job?

    Thanks all

Sounds like the rubber / valve, in the ball cock arm needs replacing. It's the one that controls the flow of water by moving in and out as water rises. It's alongside where the water enters the cistern in top. It screws out.I ain't a plumber but replaced mine last year when I had similiar problem. The rubber costs about €2 but safer to replace the complete arm for €10 in any heat merchants,
If you still feel uncomfortable about attempting it, get a plumber to change it , but have a price agreed beforehand, as you'll need to turn off water before replacing. I had a shut off valve next to mine which made it easy. Should take a plumber only 5 minutes.

I think I can get to a heat merchants. Did you just wing it or do you have any resources (pref. online) teaching you how to do it?

    Thanks

Like everything else these days,, YouTube:) helped me. Take off the cistern lid and get it clear in your head what you've to do. The only thing is water will come flying old when you screw off the old part unless you've turned off the supply to cistern. Other then that it's straight forward. Screw off old arm , salvage old ball and reattach to new arm. Screw new unit on.

As above, just replace the whole unit.

Just remember to stop the water (with the valve) before taking off the old one. These videos are a pretty useful guide:

I seen that vid it looks like the exact same valve minus mine being a horizontal entry point to a copper pipe. I don't think my multitool can wrench it off and I dont know where the shut off valve for the water is. If I can solve those two things I'll give it a go thanks all.

It could be just grit in the cone inside the ball valve holding back the water, youll normally find the water shut off in the hotpress
