Opinion on Tissot

Hi guys.....looking for a bit of advice here on Tissot watches. I've posted few times previously looking for advice on watches, particularly with regards to a high end piece. I've decided that I don't have the appetite to go big on a tag or omega type expensive watch but would never the less like to mark a milestone in my life by treating myself to a nice classy watch. I've more or less settled on what I want. Its a Tissot PRC200 Chrono Automatic with brown leather strap and white dial. I think its a really nice watch for this class of price range. I'm looking for a chunky solid watch which can double as a dress watch if needs be and this hits the spot. I can't post a link but its easy enough to get images up. I've expressed interest in the quartz version with metal strap and nearly got one off adverts.ie but got cold feet when I tried it on. Felt to light and reckon it was fake. So in summary, i'm not keen on going second hand. Can you good folk of boards give me their thoughts on the following:

    - would you rate this watch? I'm more into the high street watch brands than the bespoke stuff so I just want to know is Tissot a good reliable maker. Is 700-800 decent value for an auto chrono?
    - I tried the watch on in weirs in dundrum and really like it. It there for 815 and when I asked if there was likely to be something off in Christmas sales, they looked at me like I had 2 heads! I asked for their best price instead and they came back with 750, which is not even 10%. I was only really browsing at the time but if they knew I was serious, do people think they would come down from this a bit more in your experience?
    - Arnotts also have it on line (not sure about in store) for 815. Does anyone know if they reduce their watches in the after Christmas sales? and if so by how much?
    - I've done a bit of a check on line and found it on premiumwatches.com for 685 +20 delivery. Are these reliable? They also seem to have it on creation for 618 plus whatever excise tax you get stung from. I got a watch off them before for 130 odd and only got stung 13 as they put the value down as 60 odd quid but i'd be worried that if they put the actual price down, i'd be no better off than if i'd gotten it in a store here (and the peace of mind that brings). I'd prefer not to buy a watch this relatively expensive on line if I could avoid it but if there are any other sites which would be worth checking out, feel free to advise.

Thanks for the advice up front and apologies if its a long winded post!

    Hi Marcus
I had a Tissot (albeit a much cheaper PR50 I think). Lasted me about 2 years but eventually lost its waterproof seal (playing tennis with your watch on is probably not advised).
I would tend to be a bit careful of Tissot since then.
Hpe your search goes well. The guys on here really know their stuff (but some watch fiends seem to hate 'soulless' quartz watches - I am on the fence on that)

Evening Marcus. As per my replies in your original thread, I have one of these for just over a year at this stage, and can't recommend it highly enough. The price in Weirs seems a wee bit high. I remember when I was looking recently, both Rocks Jewellers and John Brereton had them on their website for quite a bit less. Seem to remember them being €660 or thereabouts.

Best of luck with it when you get one.

Watch with bracelet on Rocks website for €670. Can't post link from the phone. Just Google Rocks Jewellers Tissot. You could pick up a genuine strap and deployment buckle for less than the difference between Weirs price and this, and then have the option to swap between bracelet and strap.

Thanks LorMal....this will be a special occasion watch so Tennis will be defo off the agenda!

Plastering isn't great either (now don't say you weren't warned). Tissot make great looking watches for sure. Enjoy.

They seem to have changed it a fair bit alright. The dial completely different with numbered markers rather than battens. Seems to resemble the Couturier now. The version I have must be the "old" PRC200. Fairly major jump in price for minor cosmetic changes.

Sorry to chime in here lads but holy crap have they jumped in price! I only came into this thread as I saw the title and thought, "oh I have a Tissot, lets have nose in here". After actually noticing the model number on my wrist, I indeed have a PRC200 which has been my go to watch for about 5 years now. Mine has black strap, black face, yellow chrono hand. I still think it's one of the best looking watches I've ever seen - the face size is just bang on.

The only down sides I have had were the bands on the stap wilted and fell off over time - been meaning to get a new strap for a while now. A bigger deal is the chrono hand does not come to rest at 12 anymore when reset, it rests between 2 and 3 - i have it set at 12 but if i pressed the lower button on the watches side, it would default around to the 2-3 position. I'll get that fixed at some stage too.

Anyway back to the price. I know my friend in Fields did me a deal when I was buying it but I find it very hard to fathom that she did me a €600 discount!

    Anyway, quality watch.

EDIT - Here's my one and with a more familiar price too.

Thanks for the input....I'm thinking that the price difference is down to the fact that the one I am looking at is an automatic and the one you've shown there is quartz? Its a lovely watch for sure though. As I said earlier, I very nearly bought that one with a metal bracelet second hand off adverts.ie but I wasn't sure it was genuine or not. I agree though, lovely looking watch and I haven't seen many much nicer for the price. I like the auto chrono because it is slightly bigger and thicker and is a nice weight on the wrist. As I said, its a treat to myself to I don't mind paying the premium for auto....

Check out Hamilton as well - they're from the same brand family as Tissot.

Yeah i like hamiltons alright....came across a nice hamilton jazzmaster spirit of liberty auto chrono.black strap with blue hands, kinda reminds me of a tag carerra...lovely elegant watch and slightly nicer than the prc200 auto im interested in...problem is its about 500 euro dearer than the tissot on premiumwatches.com....is it worth 500 more is the question for me as its not off the scale in terms of what im willing to spend but in saying that 500 euro more for a watch i only marginally like more seems silly unless im missing something...

I think the Hamilton H21 movement, basically a 7750 modified for a 60 hr power reserve, is a much higher quality movement than the Tissot C01.211. It comes down to budget and what you like of course, but I'd say the Hamilton would be the better watch in the long run.
