What's the correct lane for this junction?

    Here's the road in question.
    https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.311849,-6.2751497,3a,75y,67.84h,61.09t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s5oSEcbS05rvH9Y6sLySMvA!2e0

I'm going on the Terenure Road to the Rathgar Road up towards Rathmines.

The junction in question has green arrows for left and straight. Road markings are faded on the google maps but in reality the left lane has a left arrow and right lane a straight arrow.

Now my situation is that if I'm in the right lane going straight, I can get stuck behind cars going right onto Highfield Road and have to indicate left and undertake them, however, I've noticed that a lot of cars go through the junction in the left lane and continue straight.

Had some tosser give me the finger for beeping him when he undertook me going through the junction and yesterday had a van driving alongside through the junction and I had a bit of trouble moving left.

If anyone is familiar with the junction what's the best course of action to take?
Is there an unwritten law of the land when it comes to this junction that I should just obey? There can be quite a few cars turning right directly after the junction so am I just better off doing what others do and going in the left lane through the junction?

I would stay in the left lane to be honest, seems the most logical.

I do know the junction, but don't go through it regularly, so long as the left lane doesn't get stopped by a red light, while the other lane has a green to go straight then I would think it the simplest way through the junction.

To go straight on go in the left lane.To turn down to Highfield Rd,take the right lane. The left turn and straight on green arrows come on simultaneously,so no issues of being caught in the left lane going straight on.

Cheers, only started using that route on my commute home as the canal eastbound just crawls.

It's directly after the junction with the traffic lights that there is a right turn.

Check my first post with the road names and go to the map overview to see what I mean.

I left it as streetview to show the actual junction itself.

I'm going from the Landsdowne hotel on Pembroke Road to Citywest Business Campus.

In the mornings I go along the canal and through Crumlin onto the long mile road.

In the evenings the canal is the nightmare so I go long mile road, walkinstown avenue, cromwell's fort rd, through to Terenure to Rathmines to Ranelagh and eventually up waterloo road.

It's a bit of a detour in the evenings but it honestly saves me 15-20 minutes when compared to crawling along the canal.

My evening commute (5.40) is from Walkinstown roundabout to Rathmines and takes approx 12 minutes.
    Would that save you time?

Yeah definitely. Rathmines to home takes less than 10 minutes, it's getting there that's the slow part. I get to Walkinstown roundabout at about 5:30. Right now, it's taking me 45-50 minutes to get home.

    Right!
From Walkinstown roundabout, take left to Walkinstown Rd,1st R to Thomas More Rd,R into Harty Ave,L onto Bunting Rd,R into Crumlin Village,L after Garda Station onto St Agnes Pk.At the roundabout go R to Captains Rd and go straight onto Ravensdale Pk to traffic lights.L to Lwr Kimmage Rd.R before petrol station to Aideen Ave.1st R into Aideen Drive.Follow that road down to T junction and L onto Melvin Rd.R onto Mt Tallant Ave.At end L onto Harolds Cross Rd then R into Brighton Sq.Follow Rd round to L of small park onto Brighton Sq.L into Garvill Ave.
At end quick L then R into Garville Rd.At end R into Frankfort Ave.At end L onto Upper Rathmines Rd.
Take R into Church Ave,straight on over Luas Track,2nd L into Ashfield Rd.At end L onto Ranelagh, then R onto Chelmsford Rd,Appian Way....then you know the rest.

When(if)you try this route, you will notice that you have avoided almost every traffic light.

That junction you refer to in the OP is a disaster at times, you do get people thinking they should be in the right lane going straight towards Rathgar Road instead of up Highfield Road and casually cutting into the left lane without looking around or taking note of any other traffic around them, I try to avoid it as it's nothing but stress, the route van driver posted is good, I've done it many times :)

Don't use my route! The more people stuck on the canal the better(for me)!

Couldn't really gauge it last night as the traffic going up Waterloo was manic for some unknown reason (AA roadwatch said Christmas shoppers?)

Is there any reason you don't just take the 2nd exit at the Walkinstown roundabout and then a left onto Bunting Rd. instead of taking the first exit and what looks like the long way around?

Here's most of it mapped out: https://goo.gl/maps/8htNF

(exactly like your post apart from the Walkinstown roundabout bit which I questioned above)

No reason, except I live in the Thomas Moore area!
For heavy traffic on Waterloo Rd,you could try:
    Wellington Place,Clyde Rd,Raglan Rd. Or
    Waterloo Rd,Wellington Lane,Wellington Rd. Or
    Waterloo Lane,Flemings Place,Pembroke Lane,Wellington Rd

Tried your route for 2 days and didn't really me much time. My car is lowered and there's about 30+ speed bumps. If I get out of work on time it's 45 minutes or less home which is the best I can hope for really.

Honestly the slowest part of the journey is actually getting to the Walkinstown roundabout.

Thanks anyway for your help though, I found a few side roads I can use if there's ever heavy traffic :)
