Found out my dad is paying for Spotify.

Added his credit card in April whilst waiting for my replacement credit card.

Do I tell him or keep enjoying my free Spotify and burn in hell for it? I really hate paying that much for music.

You know the real crooks here are the record companies. If downloads and CD's didn't cost as much as they do I wouldn't need Spotify in the first place.

I bought The Beautiful South/Housemartins CD in Tesco for €5 a couple of years ago. Seen it recently for €16.99 can't remember if it was HMV or Golden Discs.

Also I found a Smokie CD last week on the road. Who the hell throws away a Smokie CD?

Well no I did just find out. Considering getting the Vodafone red thing. Thing is its not showing up on his Tesco statements per month. Just checked. So should I continue and get him to cancel his card? Wonder how long it will last?

Until he gets you up by the neck some evening and hopefully knocks the €14 x the number of months out of you.

A tenner a month to have almost every song you can think of at your fingertips is hardly daylight robbery.

I gladly pay it rather than go through the whole rigmarole of trying to pirate music.

Update this gets even stranger. They are actually charging my other card. I haven't used that account in months and last time I ever looked at that account it was 2.39dr . The card in question was sucked into the ATM. His card expired in August and he got a new one so where the bloody hell are they getting it from?

I wouldn't pay Taylor Swift for a **** *** never mind her music. Course if she offered both for free great.

So I just checked online banking. Still 2 something od. Good to know my dad isn't getting charged at least but where exactly are they getting the money from?

Oh boo hoo, Taylor Swift is a money-hungry pop star. I think the best model is pay what you want downloads off Bandcamp. Spotify is great for listening before you buy though.

I downloaded the beautiful souths entire back catalogue about a year ago - cost me 10 minutes of my valuable time (I most likely would have spent that time looking at naked women so while it is non financial it is still a considerable cost at a human level)

You are indeed right, who throws away a smokie cd - everyone knows those things need to be burned or they'll just come back.

Also - anyone who pays for music is an idiot!

Spotify view themselves, quite rightly I believe, as more like a radio station than a record shop - by radio station standards they pay an insanely high rate, I think actually a couple of orders of magnitude above your average spin 1038 type set up.
Taylor swift, while being a very good song writer and hot as fúck, is barking up the wrong tree here. She earns over a million dollars a week - I for one do not feel all that much empathy for her when she puts on her" poor me I'm being robbed" hat.

Also - anyone who pays for music is an idiot!

If people didn't pay for music the hundreds of quality independant artists who release music on Bandcamp wouldn't be able to make music same for people on smaller record labels such as XL, Stones Throw etc and all you'd be left with is people like Taylor Swift who has a major label pumping millions into her brand.

Do you feel the same about movies as a matter of interest?

I presume you go to the cinema and just download then like myself?!

I do want to start paying for stuff again and plan to start a nice collection of my favourites on iTunes.

I download music from torrent sites, but I'll often buy an album from the same artist if I like their stuff.

Because you can integrate Shazam and spotify.

Hear a song you like...press shazam and you can instantly download it to your spotify.

Spotify can then suggest other songs in the genre like it and you discover new music.

Any pirate music app I've used is way slower and clunkier. Doesn't have the same diversity of music. You have to sift through a load links. It has ads etc.

As someone suggested, maybe I'm doing it wrong?

I've no problem paying for a good service that works. Spotify has 99.99% of songs I've ever looked for. Its integrated on my phone, PC, Television, car and home sound systems. If I add it to a playlist on one, its automatically on all the rest. There are no ads. If I want to listen to a certain genre it will play music from that genre I've never heard before but might like based on my tastes. I really have no complaints about it.

And this is why I'm now being drawn to pay for stuff - it's just easier in terms of integration.

    Maybe I'm just getting lazy!

If we continued on your logic we could just help ourselves to whatever we wanted. It's the equivalent of me walking into the local Chinese, having a big feed and then f*cking off without paying. Artists deserve to be paid for the work they put out.

I do actually agree. I can't really justify it on any moral level, it is stealing - but fúck them. If I could download a crispy chili chicken and noodles, I'd do that too.
It's not my job to ensure struggling musicians get paid, it's my job to look out for me. It's a big bad world and if I can keep my money in my pocket rather than someone else's then I will.
The effect is very much exaggerated I feel anyway, all downloading has done is allow people like myself to expand their record collections with stuff they wouldn't have in it otherwise.
95% of music or movies I've downloaded - I wouldn't have paid to see or hear anyway, I would have just carried on without experiencing them. No one has "lost" anything except in the most theoretical of senses.

Spotify costs a tenner. A tenner a month for unlimited music and syncs. I'm 23 and even I can remember buying music when a tenner for an album was a bargain-bucket price.

If you ask me, spotify is daylight robbery for music artists, but that's another story.

Pay the tenner yourself and stop burning your Dad for a service he presumably doesn't want or use.

I like the cinema, but I don't get the chance to go too often. I have no problem paying for that - you get the big screen, the sound system and so on. Similarly i have no problem paying to see gigs, plays or anything live like that.

A digital copy of an album or a movie however costs nothing to create It makes no difference if you create 1, 10, 10 million it's essentially a free process. I know the album or the movie costs money, but the copy, it doesn't really make a difference especially if you were never going to pay for it anyway.

Why would you want to start paying again by the way? Is it guilt or something?
