Wondering what would be the ideal gift to give my close childhood friend, on his ordination later this month?

    Some gift vouchers for shirts?

I'm basing this from my AFAIR reading "The Jesuit Guide to almost Everything" by J. Martin SJ. His spiritual director recommended such when he was starting his novitiate. While perhaps not the most spiritual of gifts, it would be practical start to his calling which must deal with the mundane as well as the holy .

A voucher that allows him to get whatever he wants? I'm useless at choosing gifts for people unless I know they need something, so I buy the foodies an M+S voucher; the fashion conscious a Debenhams (or St. V de P) voucher or just a petrol voucher. Can't go wrong with scratch tickets either. Don't strain to get him something on the religious side; if it's a considerate gift from an old friend, he will be happy with it.

A voucher is a great idea - depending on whether he is diocesan or with an order, he may have to set up a house in the next while. Debenhams is a good bet - has everything.

Not something religious! Most priests have more religious icons/pictures etc than they know what to do with!

When my friend was ordained, she got a little silver communion set, designed for celebrating communion in small contexts, like at someone's bedside. A little silver box for the bread, and a tiny chalice. It means a lot to her, and she uses it all the time.

I don't know if they're expensive, but I'm sure you'd get them online from specialist shops.
