VW Golf MK5 fuel problem

Hi folks. I hope someone can advise on a problem with my car.

My 2005 1.4 Petrol VW Golf started cutting out while driving last week, and then would run for a few minutes each time I started it subsequently. Eventually it would only run for 5 seconds at a time. I got the car towed to a garage and they have quoted €350 to fix a problem relating to the fuel pump.

I agree completely that it's a fuel problem, but the quote of €262+Vat for parts and the remainder for labour seems extortionate.

Looking online, I can't find any parts close to that cost. Can anyone advise on whether or not this seems like a genuine charge? I want to confirm the exact part with the garage, but it's after hours now.

    Thank you!

A new fuel pump complete (if thats what failed) with sender unit will cost around €250 before fitting and you will certainly be charged for an hours labour so maybe not extortionate at all. On the other hand a used one can be picked up for €30 to €50 in a breakers but great care must be taken when fitting it as your passengers will be sitting on it and a tankful of petrol.

Thank you for your reply - I appreciate the help. I managed to source a new pump with Otto parts that set me back €176, plus an extra €60 for fitting elsewhere.
