Should I switch from Canon to Nikon?

I am a hobbyist photographer and have been using Canon rebel DSLRs since 1999.

Last year I sold off my Canon gear and in the meantime I've just been using Sony RX 100 m3 for my travel and family shots.

I like to dabble in wildlife with a DsLR, I dream of getting good BIF images.

I'm now in a position to invest in a DSLR and lens for mainly birding, I was always set in a 2nd hand Canon 7d and the 100-400 f4 lens but I recently notice Nikon d7100 images always look amazing compared to Canon in clarity, crispness and so on.

My dilemma now is should I stick to gear I am familiar with I.e. Canon or turn to Nikon as I'm about to invest in camera and glass all over again?

    Any advice appreciated

Apparently the increased sharpness is due to the lack of an optical low-pass filter, at the risk of increased moire.

Yes I think I'll stay with Canon. I also read the Nikon buffer is very short on the D7100 where the Canons is much better and this is good for fast shots Birds in flight.

I'm swaying towards the Canon 70d, I like the size and weight of it where the 7d feels big and heavy.

The 70D looks amazing, it's getting great reviews better than the 7D. Unless you know what processing is done and how the pic was taken, comparing sharpness on the web is always a gamble.

I have a 70 D since early this year and I could not ask for a better DSLR for my ability.

I have been using for night photography recently and the performance of the ISO range is superb.

Also used it at a number of sports event and the 7fps is wonderful.

Ah heck I'm running out of superlitives, just get your hands on one, you won't look back!

    Hey camera peoples,

I am just starting to get the camera and picture bug. I have reviewed the D70 but think its way out of my budget for only starting off. Can you recommend something great for starting out but that's in the budget of around 300-500 euros. 1000 euros is fairly steep for a camera at this stage. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks folks.

If you are going to spend serious money on glass, maybe look at getting a full frame body. The added ISO ability is worth it, in either brand.

I can recommend the Cannon EOS 600D as a great advanced starter DSLR you'll shouldn't have to much bother getting a secondhand body and (18/55) lense for your budget.

Brand new you could have a look at the EOS1200D €404 with cashback from Cannon http://berminghamcameras.ie/canon-eos-1200d-and-18-55mm-ef-s-is.html

i dont get this comment. Are you telling us that mirrorless are poor choice but you can fix a bad image in photoshop?

    This is good advise.
If you want to save more money on body you could try second hand market.
canon aps-c bodies have been using same 18mb sensor since 2009 and just adding "features" to each new body. Sensorwise if you buy 500D from 2009 or 700D from last year you got the same sensor.

i wouldn't pay much heed, not the first time (s)he's popped into a thread with a comment like this and is seemingly uninterested in providing anything more than the above.
