There are so many options, or is there. Somebody with a good profile and not just a jock I imagine.
Any suggestions as to who could slip into the gig and talk nonsense for 3 hours a day. Poison chalice, if you ask me.

    Yes immediately, back to RTE

Anton was always fairly entertaining as a replacement for Ray. He'd be the logical choice in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭molly09

I have to say I never really enjoyed Anton coveting for Ray, wonder is any other comedian in the line for a radio slot??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,828 ✭✭✭robo

I am not sure who will take over but I think a good idea would be to keep Ian Dempsey on for an extra hour to play music. 3 hours is a long time for a talk show, to keep the momentum of the show, maybe a 2 hour slot would be best.
Also I hope that they replace him with someone more open minded and interested in listening to other perspectives which Darcy failed to do in the last 2-3 years.

Is this what we are paying our licence fee for. More crap from darcy. I never warmed to him so it's a personal opinion.

Hector is aching to come back to the national airwaves ;)

    This too shall pass.

They should put one of Ray's predecessors back on the slot.

Anton should get it, no contest. Him & Will are brilliant together on radio. Alison Custis for the foreseeable future, god help us all

Mark Cagney I believe. I think he's a little tied up until 10am.

    This too shall pass.

Would Savage leave his day job though ?

Bring back The Ray Foley Show :-)

I would love it, but alas it will never happen.

They did that on Friday last when they had a delay with the awards ceremony that Darcy was doing from the BG Theatre. Poor old Ian just about managed to scrape through the extra hour, even played some back to back tracks, clearly he had no material for the additional time so just muddled through.

I heard it & thought that it was actually a good hour. I just think that Ian plays some good tracks when he is not just playing chart crap.

On a replacement, I think that Anton and Will did well, only cos Will got more of a chance to talk & give his opinion. He also had a hand in picking the music...there was not so much Hozier, Paolo Nutini etc. So they would be my preference but as 2 presenters and not like Will & Ray, with Will in the background.

Anton grew on me the last time he was on, so I wouldn't mind listening to him.
I think poor Will deserves some sort of promotion. It's him that really keeps the show going, he does all the research. Hopefully he might head back to RTE too, maybe TV work. Think he used to be a researcher for the Late Late Show.

    Don't even joke about that....

My money would go on Sean Moncrieff - although they may want someone 10-15 years younger.

Tom Dunne's not upta much really, Kenny got him the boot from that slot. If he was in Today FM he'd be able to do way more music stuff during the daytime than newstalk.

He's better than RayD I think... bit more positive and less 'poignant facebook stories' than Ray.

Based on an assumption that "Twink" isn't in the running, then whoever gets it will be an improvement on Darcy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 Radio Freak

Tom dunne or sean Moncrief. Preferably dunne cos he would play better music

    Tom Dunne?

    Short memories here.

He had a mid morning show

    It didn't work!

That's why they bought in Pat Kenny ..... Remember ?

He used to cover for Darcy before that show and was generally well received. Don't newstalk have a different mandate to today fm in terms of content? If so the same presenter could do a very different show.

I would like Tom Dunne but prepare to be underwhelmed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,646 ✭✭✭washman3

Is he finally fulfilling his promise to leave Ireland if Enda Kenny ever became Taoiseach.?? Or was that just a plug for his beloved Fianna Fail before the last election.?
Personally, if he were to disappear off the face of the Earth I would be more than happy.

What about Dil Wickremasinghe ? She would set the mid-morning airwaves on fire.

Or keeping a similar theme to D'arcy having a love-in with the Mrs. in the morning how about Louise Duffy and new media star Paul Galvin doing a show together :pac:

Does anyone think that communicorp will look elsewhere at the pool of talent out there or will they just play it safe and roll in Anton Savage? I hear that Will Hanifan has already being approached by RTE to work with Ray on his new show on RTae Radio 1 in February 2015.

Unless Anton Savage is desperate to get into the Irish radio scene full time, I'd say he'll pass. From what I could see, he regarded filling in for D'Arcy as a bit of a lark, another way of maintaining his media profile, leaning on a good team (Will, Mairead, et al) who helped him a lot. He seems to have a successful PR career - why at this stage of his life would he immerse himself in a new career?

I hope he doesn't get this coveted gig. He irritates me. Let's give it to Dermot & Dave, yippee. They could do worse. I'm being half- serious here. Does anyone else have better suggestions for this new gig?

    +1

I like her show and to have her deal with general topics would be interesting.

If today fm are going down the same route as before its going to have to be a housewives favourite isnt it, Darcy has an audience because he was famous before he moved there and built a brand, many people grew up with him on TV and he was a safe pair of hands, bit nostalgic on top of that he was a capeable broadcaster and had a charm and a wit, never listened much but the majority seem to think he was just indulging himself by the end. D&D would be well liked in that slot, but it would be humour all the way and they wont move now they have a slot. If you look around Dublin no one really fits the bill as being able to do that job, Johnathan Mcrea does a good job filling in on Newstalk, is very competent and likeable but its unlikely he would be given such responsibility, theres the possibility Moncrieff will be moved across but that would be much of a muchness really and then newstalk have a hole to fill while his s how does very well...

I'd very much like to see ray foley get the job and i think he would do very well with it. He filled in for them before didn't he when the whole darcy crew was on holiday. Seem to remember him doing that slot for a week a few years ago.

The number of people suitable to take over from darcy is quite limited. To do a similar show they would need someone who can cover the light and fluffy topics and the serious all in a space of three hours, so they need to have intellectual clout, the person needs to be a good interviewer which is something darcy wasnt because he let his own opinions dominate interviews. Darcy's replacement needs to be likeable and have instant name recognition and be free to take up his / her new role in the new year.

I think Rick O Shea would be a great fit. Granted his movements in the short term would be subject to contract but Rick is a national radio figure , well respected , well read, articulate, interviews should be no bother to him and he generally comes across as a nice guy. He's been hosting on national radio for years so it wouldnt be daunting for him to make the move. O Shea is also a family man so generationally he's relatable as far as the shows current demo is concerned. He's also a very good broadcaster who judging by his stints on Lyric is above the hot hits format at this stage. And .. it would be a nice revenge mission by Today FM after RTE having poached Ray.

Sorry but Rick OShea is a nonentity, He peaked about 12 years ago when he was popular with school kids for a short while

haha, presume that you're being sarcastic on that one - that would drive the ratings down to 0!
She has to be the most annoying person on radio, with her constant droning on about her quadruple minority status (female lesbian person-of-colour immigrant living in Ireland).

Tom Dunne had his chance already - he is just too anodyne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭toadfly

Will Leahy unlikely to give up the day job either I presume...very few good candidates.

Actually, that's a really good call: I can't listen to his show because...it's on 2fm and it's simply not on my radar but his Twitter account is entertaining and seems to offer more than the usual cheesy DJ fare. Hmm...

Haven't listened to newstalk in years but I always enjoyed Moncrieff. My question would be, why would he leave? Is his viewership down? Is there any sign's he wants to leave?

Of course there wasn't a sign that D'Arcy wanted to leave either so it would be poetic irony for Moncrieff to go to Today FM ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,467 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

I really enjoy Moncrief in the afternoon, not sure today fm would go for him might not fit quite right or possibly they wouldn't think he was, if they want to keep the same demographic. Im expecting a fairly uninspiring moving around of staff.
