What are these like? Looking at picking up one in the New Year - primarily for towing a horsebox, but will also be used for driving to work the odd time and driving Dublin-Limerick return every 6 Weeks.

Mixed opinions on the reliability of them, most people I talk to wouldn't part with theirs, some say you'd need to keep trading up as they lose reliability quickly.

Am on a budget (approx €5k but this can move depending on vehicle and value I'm getting) so am looking at 05-06 model, the tax is a killer but having done the numbers it's better than taking out a loan to get a 09-10 Sorento for the lower rate of tax.

Appreciate any advice or opinions. Or alternative suggestions too.

On my second one. Bought in 07, first one for 5 years from new - zero problem -95,000 k

Bought a 12 model , again no issues (at all) at 69,000

The ones you may be looking at are possibly 139hhp with the low ratio box. Personally a little bit underpowered in my opinion, especially if you intend to tow,

From 07, they had 168bhp and still with the low ratio box. Fantastic machine, my friend bought at same time as me and has just moved his on with about 300,000 k Of course he had a few problems but nothing major except the turbo charger which went at about 200,000k

all and all a good machine and very capable off road. I've even dragged a discovery off the bog with one...

Friend of mine has one ( 2007) & timing chain snapped on it last week with only 172km on it ! Engine fit for the skip.Tried every breaker in the country & second hand engines not be to had for love or money as they are in such demand! He has tried the UK & cheapest he can find is £2400 plus delivery !
Buyer beware... If timing chain & tensioners are replaced should be ok to buy.

Thanks guys. From what I can see the towing capacity on the 2.5l model is 3,500kg, which is the highest on some of the 'budget' models I've been looking at - i.e., not a Landcruiser or Pathfinder, which I can't afford :)

For every one positive review I get a negative review, and they're so chalk and cheese (one says best car they ever had, the other said don't touch with a barge pole) so it's hard to know!
