    holiday or a job dilemma?
i have a friend who i agreed to go on holiday its in las vegas between 9 th till 16 of jan all booked and paid for. Prior to this i did an online exam for the civil service in july . GOT an email yes you passed but thanks and no thanks.

now me and my friend went through a ****ty year. and a holiday in jan would be a perfect start to a new year. however yesterday on friday i received an email inviting me to the next stage an interview yippeex however i have been reading on boards that you more or less get an offer of a job pretty quickly and therefore you have to accept with the start date pretty quickish.
my interview is on thursday and im dying to go away. However my friend will be understandly annoyed with me. As she does not know i even apply to work there.
my options are limited i feel.
i could say to then im available to work etc date but not on those dates. my Dp thinks im being too pushy and that is a no no no for them.
or i could pretend nothing and hope for the best and panic when a job offer comes through.
the jobs locations are ballbriggan or clonskeagh. Ballbriggan is a no go area for me its to far an commute but clonskeagh yea maybe.
not to sure what to do.
any advice will help what would you do if you were in my shoes.
yes go and get the job for maybe 8 ish weeks and piss of my friend and trust me she is the most nicest person in the world and cross her and she will wash her hands of you.
ugh i feeling so sick over this im beginning to wish i never got the email.
yes im still going for the interview

Normally they're semi-flexible with start dates- they told me to start on the 2nd of June- I told them I had to give work notice, and I wanted a break before I started- and I was willing to start on the 1st of July. They hummed and hawed- but allowed it. On the downside- I missed the induction training- and after 14 years in the place- have never been on induction training. I don't think I missed anything critical though.

Ask- you have nothing to loose.

Take the job and go on the holiday. The best way to start a new job is nice and fresh after a good break!

Is this the TCO job? When I worked as TCO 2 people had hols booked for near the start of the job, maybe 2/3 weeks in. They didn't mention it til they started & it was completely fine.

Nearly all places understand that you have a life outside work that still goes on despite them.

Tell the place if you get offered the role that you have previous holidays booked since before you were responded too.

Generally they will not mind as people do have lives outside of work and this life does go on when you are job hunting.
They may tell you to take unpaid leave but so be it.

I once started in a job and was there for 3 days before going on my (belated) honeymoon. Company was fine as I had told them in advance.
