Finding what the rate means

    Hello people,

I'm doing a data project on heart surgery. I have the data but I can't figure our what the rate means. For example there's one hospital which performed 6,865 heart surgeries. Of these, 234 resulted in the patient dying. The data says this is a mortality rate of 136.0. But it doesn't say what that rate is. Is it per 100 cases? Per 1000? I've done maths for these but they didn't turn out right. However, I wouldn't be surprised if my maths was wrong. Anyone able to help? Cheers

It seems like they have given you the expression per approx. 3990 cases? (136/3990)*6865 = 233.9949875 ie 234, kind of absurd, maybe 3990 means something to you?

The data you have relatesto one specific hospital. Is there anyway of checking what the mortality rate is considered to be for these procedures nationally/internationally. Could it be that the 136 means that the mortality rate in this hospital is 136% of the national/international rate for these procedures?
