    1.9 110 bhp diesel.
Driving on the motorway at 120 when there was a bang, smoke, warning lights, and a serious rattle (felt like a blow out).
Opened the bonnet and there's oil everywhere.
Only picked her up from a service 15 miles ago!
    Is this common?
Waiting for the garage to pick us up.

Is it diesel or definitely oil?

They do like to throw a rod...common enough.

It's a bit coincidental that it's decided to blow up so soon after a service though. Did this happen on the way back from the garage by any chance?

    Definitely oil.
    Serviced her yesterday.
What's the crack if its the conrod?

    Replace engine if it's conrod

    Yep its the conrod.
    New engine it is so.
Could it be related to the service?

Only if they put incorrect oil, too much or not enough of it.

Did it do just 15 miles after the service?
Id be looking at all possibilities tbh.

Yeah 15 miles would have been the max it done.

Get an itemised receipt for the service stating how much oil was put into the engine. Although since the garage already knows what happened they may cover themselves there IF they were in the wrong in the first place.

Common issue and a co-incidence I'd say. I doubt very much the garage did anything tbh. If they had done something iffy with the oil such as too little oil I doubt you'd have made it 15 miles without any issue

    Its a tricky situation alright.
Not sure where to go from here.

Surely if you're insured with fully comp then it's an insurance claim?

    Nope.

Wouldn't be too little oil as there would be an obvious warning light. Wrong type oil won't do immediate catastrophic damage.

If it was the garages fault and they only serviced the car, what could have they done?

No1: Too little oil- ( oil light would have came up, and this would not cause the rod to break)

No2: To much oil ( again, it wouldn't throw the rod, but it could blow the seals and runaway.. Btw you would need tons of extra oil for that to happen)

No2: wrong filter, etc ( not associated with the rod)

I would say it is a pure coincidence, it just turned out to be this way... BXE engine by any chance?

Very common for BXE/BKC to throw a rod out. Google will reveal some of the horror story with the above mention engine code.

2nd Engine will be your best bet.

Can you not just replace the piston, sump and conrod if it hasn't damaged anything else. Or does it do more damage to the crank etc.?

    Yup its a BXE engine.
Have been reading up on them.
Is there much point in replacing the engine if the next one could be likely to do the same?

Yep, yet another BXE engine is likely to fail the same way.

But there's a thread somewhere here on boards someone replaced BXE by something else, slightly different, but without conrod problems, not really much modifications though.

Old BKC engine will fit aswell, less troublesome, and Plug and Play. Different rods, but still not a great engine to be honest.

Bkd engine will fit and it's a much better engine..
