I bought a Ruger .243 American. Serious gun for the price. Jason Doyle also uses one not .243 though he had a post on the stalk Ireland Facebook page and said he was very impressed. I had a marlin .223 pain in the balls no mag thank god the Kruger has a detachable mag.

The ruger m77 is a good solid gun with a quality feel to it. Absolutely nothing wrong with them. My one is very very accurate, I couldn't be happier with it.

If it's the ruger American you are considering that's a totally different animal and a far cheaper gun. It's their budget offering. I've never fired one but the reviews they get seem to be positive. However they do have a very cheap plasticy feel to them I found. Much like the marlin. Now that may have no reflection on their accuracy, they may be a very accurate tool. I just didnt like the feel of them. But then I didn't like the plastic feel of the tikka either and they are good accurate guns and many people are happy with them.
Regarding the two you have mentioned I'd feel happier putting the same money into a better quality secondhand gun. But if you have to take one of them I'd go for the ruger. Just based on the review's I've read.

Have a look at that review. Out of the box ruger american .243 650 yards 3 shot group all inside the size of a box of bullets. I think thats very impressive for the money.

I would try and find a 700 to be honest. T3 would probably be out of the price range. How about a Howa 1500?

I haven't a Marlin or Ruger American. However, like the Ruger name. I would probably choose it.

Just keep in mind that in 243, the current price of Ruger in the States is €275. It is an entry level gun, priced accordingly.

I'll have to get to a store to pick one up and give it the once over. Almost feel like ordering one now!

Thumbs up for the ruger 243,

Pros - Cheap cheap cheap. You get a lotof bang for you buck.

For a cheap rifle its floated, its light and it shoots straight, youll kill deer no problem.

Cons - The magazine is iffy, liable to jam. People seem found of it Id get rid of it in a heart beat.

It does have a cheapish feel but its much better than the savage.

Its nothing special though, its a cheap stalking rifle.

If you can afford it id go for a 700 etc but if your stuck for cash its a nice buy.

Havent fired a marlin so i cant comment on that
