what kind of price for fitting to an 09 i litre ?My old man is getting it done with toyota main dealer next week. They did a service on wednesday for the nct today which he passed but said alternator due to be replaced.Bit wary as car has only done 3000 miles annually last couple of years and only 21000 in total. Is this not very early?

It's 5 years old regardless, could have had anything happen since.

As for a price i wouldn't go to a dealer on that age of a car really.

Why are they replacing the altinator, has it stopped charging the battery or is the battery light stay on when driving?

.... but said alternator due to be replaced.....

Alternators are never replaced routinely, only when they fail.

Thats what makes me suspicious.Unfortunately im working away so havent seen it myself.Old man says it starts fine and says dash light with battery symbol stays on for short time and goes out when car gets up and running.I just dont want him going to unecessary expense-no doubt in my mind that battery-its the original-more likely source.

Could it have been the alternator/fan belt they were talking about? Would be due a replacement if the same one is on from new.

Would make more sense,i had a 04 avensis for over 7 years and never replaced the alternator, only the belt.

this is common on the 06 onwards model yaris, normally the alternator will still be charging the battery fine but the light indicates there is a fault with the alternator itself, i believe in most cases its is due to the rectifier in the alternator being faulty. Often the alternator doesn't need to be replaced, it can be re-conditioned..... which is normally the cheapest way out of it.

because the garage don't know when this component is actually going to fail (doing its job as opposed to a warning light) they are advising to carry out the repair now, to avoid the car braking down on the road. (often they can go for months with the warning light on without a problem)

you should be able to get this job done for approx €250 incl labour and vat. the cost to get the alternator re-conditioned is the expensive bit, as its very easy to access the part for removing and fitted so the labour should be a small amount.
