HTC Sensation - can't type anymore.

I have the phone over 3 years so I suppose I should complain. It just won't bring up the keyboard to type anymore. When I go into language and keyboard settings, the touch input option is ticked, but greyed out. I can't un-tick it.

Any suggestions on how I can fix it?

I still have a Senny knocking about here that I use as an mp3 player. So anyways I am assuming that you are running the stock (official) HTC rom and not some custom rom.

It is exactly the same on mine. Pretty sure this is normal if you don't have any other keyboards installed, like Swiftkey, Swipe, Google Keyboard etc. It won't let you untick it if it is the only keyboard.

Instead, focus on the line just below sub-heading "Keyboard & input methods", where it says "Default". What does it say in this section? In mine it says "Touch input" and my keyboard is working completely normally.
If you have something different in this section then this may be the problem. Tap on "Default" and see if it lets you select "Touch input"

This is settings on mine. It's hard to tell from the photo below, but the tick area where it says "Touch input" is greyed out and can't be changed on mine either, as it is the only keyboard installed at present.

Hope this is of some help.

    Thanks for the reply.
Mine says touch input too. I've never changed the settings, never added a different keyboard.
It's the bog standard phone set up.
The only apps I have added to my phone now are whataspp and email as I thought it might be a memory problem.
I think it's time to get a new phone!

    Ah don't give up yet.!

I guess the next thing to try would be go to Settings > Apps
In the farthest right tab, which says "All" at the top, scroll down and look for Touch input app. List is alphabetical so it will be a long way down.
In the settings for the app, first check that app is enabled. If it is enabled the button on top right will say Disable.
If app seems to be enabled as it should be, then try clearing the data for the app. This unfortunately will also clear any custom words you have stored in the keyboard's dictionary.
After clearing data give the phone a reboot and see if keyboard works.

Another thing to try would be to install a different keyboard from the Play Store and see if that works.
I'd suggest perhaps trying the Google Keyboard, as it is free and pretty straightforward to use.

Last of all you could try a factory reset, but make sure you have any important data like your contacts backed up to Google servers or saved to your sim or sdcard, as this will wipe everything except your sdcard and make the phone like it was when you unboxed it.That said, I would still remove the sdcard just in case before wiping the phone.
On Sensation factory reset is the farthest down option under Settings > Storage.

    Good luck with it.

Clearing the data under the app and restarting worked!
    Thanks so much.
You've saved me a few bob for xmas.
    Am delighted! :)
