Say you hit a slightly wayward shot and think to yourself:

"Ah, that clearly landed in the rough about 7/8 feet off the fairway - no need for a provisional..."

Then you get up there and you can't find it for the life of you, it's possibly plugged and/or hiding under a leaf.

Do you have to trek all the way back and hit another?

Of course you do, it's a lost ball !

Not if you are prepared to scratch the hole (stableford) but yes if you want to continue to play the hole.

Always the safe option. Especially this time of year with soft ground and lots of leafs for them to hide under.

I'd advise you to download and read the R&A rules of golf.

Thought lost ball was 2 shot penalty. i.e hit 4th shot from where you reckon it landed, or trek back and play 3rd shot from tee(better option).

    Simple guidelines are here:

    http://www.randa.org/en/Playing-Golf/Quick-Guide-to-the-Rules/Ball-Lost-or-Out-of-Bounds-Provisional-Ball.aspx

You'll find different formats of the rules here:

    http://www.randa.org/en/RandA/Downloads-and-Publications.aspx

It's worth reading them and remembering the basic ones like what happens if I lose a ball or think that a ball may be lost. Yes I have played with people who think it's OK to drop a ball close to where they think that the ball was lost. Knowing where to drop is also worth reading as people often do it wrong (both to their advantage and disadvantage).
