What?! You can get the news on other stations and through various means and media outlets.

9pm on Saturday night? They should be airing quality programming (imported or otherwise) or a movie or something.

F*cking news at 9pm on Saturday night. Bore off.

To be replaced by an 'I'm a 3 Star Winner Get me Out of Here' style show, set in Connemara, whereby the lucky contestants get to do bush tucker style trials in order to win big cash prizes. It might work ya know...

*Disclaimer* This might be a figment of my overactive imagination.

Don't get too nostalgic, the retooled version Million Euro Challenge will appear in the New Year.

I'd imagine with the change in lottery provider that they'll be back with a new show soon enough, probably just have to finish off old contracts and start new ones.

Thank heavens for that. It was neither a game show or quiz show, with no skill involved in winning. Suitable for showing maybe in the mornings and not taking up a prime time slot.

I'd imagine they got massive advertising from the National Lottery for running the show at prime time, also, there is a hint of gambling about the show so they mightn't want to run it too early in case the poor kiddies get hooked.

The whole "hard luck" and "well done" cause people pressed a f**king button and some random act used to drive me crazy, so much so that I couldn't watch it.

I was in the pub 1 night when it was on and started a drinking game where everyone had to take a drink when those phrases were used, the poor bar man was wrecked from having to refill out drinks the whole time.

What about poor Sinead and Marty now? It wasn't worth his while getting those hair plugs in the end! :). In fairness he's a very accomplished presenter so I hope he shows up somehwere else soon enough. I've alwasy counted my blessings that show wasn't called "Win and Streak" :)

Indeed. We saw quite enough of Marty in that moped picture year's ago.

I expect Liveline to dedicate a full week of callers moaning about its demise, there's likely to be marches on National Lottery with people burning their 3 Stars tickets outside in protest.

Now hang on, guys. Hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on. :o:o:o:o:o

Has anyone at RTE or the National Lottery actually confirmed that Winning Streak is ending for good?

I flicked through last Saturday's episode of WS on RTE Player - and it didn't appear to me as if Marty or Sinead explicitly said that the show was coming to an end, even though they mentioned this new Million Euro Challenge game.

Nor does it explicitly say anywhere on the Lottery's site that WS is ending, and that this new game is a permanent replacement.

And nor have I found any articles from newspapers or entertainment sites saying that WS is disappearing from the airwaves forever. In fact, there's an interview with Marty in this evening's Herald, which ends with the following:
Marty said that he is looking forward to Christmas and even though Winning Streak will be taking a break, he'll return again with his co-host Sinead Kennedy.

"Winning Streak is ending and then there's a new one [Million Euro Challenge] coming on for a period of time, and then Sinead and I are back again. We knew this was happening, so that's fine. I'm able to live with that," he said.

    http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/tv-radio/marty-whelan-were-touchy-feely-at-home-30796666.html

Now the Herald isn't always right - but if it is in this case, then I'm taking it to mean that WS will be back in September 2015.

So I'm sorry to say this - but I think that, for the time being, some of us might be getting a little ahead of ourselves here... :o:o:o:o:o

And further apologies for being pedantic, but I'm fairly sure that WS began in 1990 rather than 1989. :o;)

Gutted. What is it with shambolic RTE ?!%?!?:(
They come up with a good show, popular for years, part of the furniture, and suberb entertainment every week without fail. And they cancel it.....
Really have no judgement at all in Montrose. What happened, some pen pusher get 'promoted' and decide they want to make their mark, revamp, shake it up, etc.
    Disgusted.
Worth mounting a Facebook campaign or something to get them to bring it back ?

It's not RTE who have cancelled it, It's the new owners of the national lottery

I don't mean to be nasty here - but if you're so sure that Winning Streak is disappearing forever, then can you please provide any confirmation? :o:o:o:)

Also, it's worth pointing out that An Post has a stake in Premier Lotteries Ireland - so it hasn't relinquished ownership of the National Lottery completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭Straylight

If it does go, whatever it's replaced with will basically be more of the same. It's purely a vehicle for the National Lottery to give away loads of cash on national TV. That in itself I don't have much problem with, but can the new show please do away with the audience full of inbreds and their stupid banners please?

And get rid of the stupid "games". I don't recall what ones they're doing now but I do remember when they pressed a button and then onscreen you'd have some awful CGI yoke going over Wexford Bridge or some other "landmark" and a random monetary value would pop up.

They should replace it with a quiz show and give away the money that way.

There used to be some pretty decent quizzes on the BBC that were linked to the UK lotto.

Even with the National Lottery's (partial) change of ownership, I don't think they and RTE are going to consider quizzes on Saturday evenings any time soon. :(

There are still quizzes around the draws on BBC1 on Saturday nights - although they're sadly not as entertaining as they used to be. :(

Just to echo what Go Harvey Go has been saying - Winning Streak is not dead.
It's flashing lights and bouncing balls will return, but there will be also be a new Lottery show.
The National Lottery is planning to launch a new weekly game show on RTÉ television early next year in a bid to boost sales.

The show, which promises big cash prizes, will run once a week on a weekend evening, with contestants being drawn from winning scratch card entries.

It will be separate from the lottery’s popular Winning Streak show, which is watched by up to 250,000 viewers a week.

They should replace it with a quiz show and give away the money that way.

The National Lottery's licence restricts them to "pure games of chance". Anything involving skill of any kind is illegal.

As long as they leave the announcing of the lotto number alone I'll be happy, last thing we need is them to copy the UK format for that, just tell us the fupping numbers already  :D

LOL there's obviously a subliminal message about the audience demographic when they have two grey haired presenters, Marty and Sinead! :). I'm forced to watch some of it most Saturday evenings if I'm home. For once they sewed Sinead into the gúna this week which certainly helped :)

Pretty much confirmed by the Indo and the Herald (yes, you can't always trust them, but it seems you can in this case):

    http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/television/tv-news/winning-streak-off-new-year-schedule-as-nicky-byrne-to-take-saturday-nights-30812255.html
    http://www.herald.ie/news/former-westlife-star-nicky-to-front-new-lottery-game-show-30812852.html

More important, however, is the fact that Winning Streak will move to the summer instead of ending for good.

Which means that this thread should either be locked or renamed... :o:o:o;)
