Does this TV have both Freeview and Saorview...?
My understanding is that if a TV has Freeview it won't work in the ROI as you need to have Saorview, every TV Ive seen on Argos has Freeview for some reason so I haven't considered buying from there, I didn't know you could get a TV with both....?

The question you need to ask is whether it has freeview HD or not if it is not HD then you only get the SD saorview channels meaning you'll be missing out on the rtes.

Edit: appears to have freeview HD so it should work fine here in Ireland.

    Freeview HD or Saorview ?

A Freeview HD TV will receive Saorview.

The description in the OP specifically says Saorview so I don't think it's an issue.

Thanks for that. I didn't realise that a Freeview TV will receive Saorview and in fact some years back when I bought my current TV it was Freeview and I was told by the salesman that it wouldn't work in the ROI so I never even tried it.

I've 2 standard Freeview LG's that deliver Saorview with no issues whatsoever.

I know the advice you'll often see given on boards is 'if it's not Freeview HD, it won't do Saorview', but that's not a hard & fast rule by any means.

For the past few years, many 'standard' Freeview sets have had the requisite goodies on-board to deliver Saorview i.e. DVB-T + MPEG4 + MHEG5.

    I have the 42 inch version - 42LB630V

    Pros
-The picture is really impressive on this. To the point that if something has been poorly filmed it looks very weird. Not sure how to say that more articulately but other people agree when they watch it. Something well filmed / produced is fantastic though

-The inbuilt sat and saorview tuners means you can do away with additional sat boxes. Perfect if you want to mount it on the wall without additional cables / boxes

-The webOS card interface has massive potential and is how all future TV interfaces should be based on

-There is an inbuilt pause / rewind / scheduled record facility called LG Time Machine which is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't used it yet. See below.

-When my Amazon Fire TV box goes to sleep the LG goes to sleep too. Love that.

    Cons
-The UI is very unintuative despite the nice card selection. There are all sorts of competing menus. I've had the TV for about 5 months and it still takes me ages and lots of clicks to figure out how to change from Saorview to Satelite. The different sources should be abstracted away from the user.

    - The pause / rewind / scheduled record facility Time Machine won't work with any thumb drive I've tried. I suppose its something got to do with NTFS / FAT32 but it's too much effort to solve so I've never been able to use this facility. I haven't found any support documentation from LG to help with this.

    How do they compare...?
Is it worth paying the extra for this..?

Just looking at this Argos page where it says you get a €10 gift voucher if you spend €100, if you spend €500 on a TV will they then give you a voucher for €50...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭ncur

Nope afraid not. You'll get a €10 voucher if you spend €100 or €1000, you don't get a voucher for every €100 you spend unless you spent 5 x €100 in 5 separate transactions, you'd get 5 separate vouchers then!

    That's a pity...

So getting back to the 47" LG TV, is it worth it at that price....?

I also have the above TV (ibood) and agree with all the above comments. One additional Con is the TV stand/legs, unless you are wall mounting the tv you will require a very wide TV stand, as you cannot move the legs towards the middle, so your stand needs to be the width of the TV.

Thanks for that @jmch81, I was just about to go out and pick up one of these until I saw your post, I measured the stand I intend to use and it's only 42" wide, I don't want to have to go buy another one so back to the drawing board now as it looks like I'll have to choose another TV...

This article is worth a read if you are considering buying an LG webOS TV. The platform could be so much better

Bear in mind its 47" diag. The TV measures 107cms ( or exactly 42" ) from L to R with the base stands most likely not extending to the outer edges. You could well be OK.

Yes I had another look for TVs but I kept coming back to this one and then I suddenly remembered that and rechecked the dimensions and it was just within. I went off and bought the TV and it fits fine with a little bit to spare on either side.
It's a really nice looking piece of kit, I haven't had a chance to test it fully but my son has Been playing his XBox on there all afternoon and it looks stunning.
    So far so good...
