Help with flights to Kiev

Hi folks, i'm just going to paste an e-mail I sent to a friend as all the info is there, maybe someone can shed light on the issue i'm having...

Few of us planning to visit Chernobyl at the end of April. I had a quick look on Google flights with the following info:
    From Dublin
    To Kiev
    Via. Amsterdam

    Out: 27th April
    In: May 4th

Total price for this (return) is currently €232 which is a bargain.

    Issues we are having:
Outbound flight only leaves 45 minutes connecting in Amsterdam - surely not enough?

Inbound: We want to spend 2 - 3 nights in Amsterdam. So, I thought how we'd do this is just book one way out, and 2 separate flights on the way back. However, when I try to book just an out-bound flight the outbound flight alone jumps to over €700

Is there a trick i'm missing, or can you work your magic? To be specific, here is what we'd like to do:
Outbound on 27th April, get to Kiev ASAP (although we may have to overnight in Amsterdam if 45 mins connecting isin't enough)
Inbound: Depart Kiev on April 30th to Amsterdam. Depart Amsterdam on May 4th

    Thanks folks

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but Schiphol airport, while it's very big, is still a single terminal, so connecting in 45 minutes is quite feasible.

No idea on the rest of your questions, sorry...

The cheapest i'm finding using multi-trip search on the ITA Matrix is €425 from British Airways but involves a lot faffing around, overnight stay in Heathrow and every journey routing through Heathrow.

You seem to be doing a lot of travelling for basically 2 days in Chernobyl which seems a bit pointless, maybe separate the two trips?

Given the price you've achieved for return to Kiev with KLM it might be worth ringing them and seeing if they can accommodate a break on the return leg. By the way once KLM have sold you the ticket it's their responsibility to get you onto the connecting flight and even if you miss it they'll get you on the next trip.

I've used that connection a couple of times with no problem - checked suitcase too. As both
flights are outside Schengen area the gates are usually close and no passport queue.

Re. outbound flights - thanks for the info, I was worried 45 mins wouldn't cut it. We're hand luggage only so hopefully there'll be no issues.

I'll keep on re. return flights

45 mins is a fine cut.

Any delays to your outgoing flight and you're screwed.

If you only have hand luggage then you can book the original flight and just not get on the last leg. This will give you the time you want in Amsterdam on the return. You would then need to book your own Amsterdam-Dublin leg separately. Obviously you can't do this is you have luggage booked.

    That is the risk.

Not true. If we miss the connection flight due to delay, it is the responsibility of the flight operator to sort us out, doesn't bother us... worse case scenario a night in Amsterdam :D

A poster above said 45 mins is enough in that airport (provided no delays) and we only have hand luggage

If you are happy with that fall back, then go for it. If you are on time from Dublin you will be fine.
