Employment/Revenue question

    Hi,

I was employed on a temporary basis during the summer and I haven't been paid for it yet. The employer told me for the payment to go through I have to ring revenue and tell them I worked for them so that my tax details will be registered before they pay me otherwise I'd be on emergency tax or something?

My question is do I just ring my local revenue office? I've never had to do this before...

    God no,

They can still pay you, it is up to you to get your P45 or tax credits in order.

If you get paid and the company doesn't have your PPS number even they still pay you, just take the highest tax take from you.

What they did was, pay me half (in august!) and then wait for me to contact revenue with their employer number and say I was working for them at the time. They didn't explain this clearly to me though which is why I'm still chasing them about it months later.

So today, I rang them and they said ring revenue, give them that number and then they'll pay me the rest once that's been registered.

It's so confusing like I haven't a jot of what's going on. I've never done temp work before and any other job I have the employer has taken care of all of the tax stuff for me.

Use the contact locator on this page to find your local office and give them a call, they will talk you through what needs doing.

Thanks a mill, I thought that was the number to call but I needed to be sure. :)

You didn't say that in the initial post, it is two very different things.

What they have done is held the tax back for you until you get your finger out and give the revenue your employment details.

Was this your very first employment

Um, the post you quoted was my OP, so yes I did.

No, I've worked before and after this job.

Sorry, I didn't see that post.

That is an odd way for the company to deal with this, as previously pointed out it is your responsibility to sort out your tax affairs and any over-payment of tax through emergency tax can be reclaimed anyway. I would expect to be paid in full minus any tax owed, and leave myself to sort out the rest.

That said, you really should get your details registered asap whenever you start a new job to avoid paying through the nose as emergency tax is quite punitive after the first few weeks (IIRC you get no allowances after a couple of weeks)

I only worked for them for 3 weeks and I genuinely didn't know I had to register it myself! I tried to ring them just there but the lines don't open until half one would you believe.

Threads and queries like this really prove the need for having a course about personal finances in secondary school. Thank god I know fifty quotes from Hamlet but not how to set my own finances in order!

Rather than creating a new thread, can I ask a related q? My OH only started work here in May, but has been paying normal tax since. Should she have been paying anything at all for the first while given that she had unused tax credits from Jan to May? I don't want to say anything to her in case I am wrong lol

At this late stage it would be best to wait until the end of the year and then request a P21 (PAYE Balancing Statement) which should correct any overpayment of tax in 2014. This may be through a direct refund or by adjustment of next year's tax credits (usually the former).

Makes sense, she has already recieved December wages. Thanks! :)

These are your first two posts.

In the first one you said you weren't paid. In the second you said you were paid half.

Not being paid and being paid half are 2 very different things OP.

All that happened here was the company withheld 50% of your wages because they obviously had no revenue details for you. Most companies would have just paid you and let you sort it later with the tax office yourself.

They were being very fair to you as you need to give them your details, sort revenue and then they will pay you. They haven't don't this yet as they don't want to be stuck paying tax on your behalf later in the year

    How exactly might that happen?

If a company gives you 100% payout for the financial year as they haven't deducted your taxes properly they are liable for this amount.

In the case of this chap, it would seem his employer have just withheld his payment, not placed it all through revenue.

They did though, I gave them my PPS and other details at the same time as a friend who did the work for them also. The only thing was her second payment went through when mine didn't. It was really confusing.

Anyway, my query wasn't why they did what they did, it was what way to contact revenue and what do I say etc.

    Thanks for the replies :)

Give them a call and give your pps
then you need your employers registered number.

You should be good to go then.

No company would do that as they are legally required to deduct tax.

In the case we are talking about, in the absence of the completed paperwork the company should deduct tax on an emergency basis until such time as the employee has provided their details.

Should an underpayment situation occur for the individual (which is highly unlikely) it is their responsibility to resolve with Revenue, not their employers.

As long as the employer deducts emergency tax in this case they have no further liability. That is why I believe their behaviour to be strange.

I swear I've had it with Revenue. Still waiting for tax relief on tuition fees. When I log onto PAYE anytime it says my request has been completed - is this Revenue code for "sitting in someone's in-tray"?

In a roundabout way that is what I said.

I have worked in some summer jobs before where they do this though with wages, but like I said a company wont want to be cought with the OP's tax bill he if doesn't get it sorted out.

To be fair though, From reading then OP's posts I think he has been told by his employer that half his wages are being held by revenue as tax and he can claim them back.
Too many of his posts have been contradictory and information only comes out after asked for it.

    Simple steps:

    Op got paid,
    Op had 50% deducted
Company said to OP he will get it back once he has correct his tax credits for time of employment
OP thought it was the company themselves holding his money.

Send them an email. I think it took me about 6 months to sort mine out, it was just ridiculous.

Called this morning and she said an amended tax credit cert issued Tuesday - I guess it must have missed payroll by a day :( Hopefully next week, the drinks are on me! :)
