Laptop speakers do not switch off when headphones are plugged in

    Hello all,
Sorry mods if this is posted in the wrong place to ask this but i've been annoying myself with this problem for the last few hours :P

My girlfriend gave me her laptop tonight to fix. The problem is that when headphones are stuck into the headphone jack on the laptop the speakers are still putting out sound. Oddly enough when the sound is muted, do they then produce sound through the headphones only. Which is so weird.

So I searched Google and since audio is still being produced through the headphone jack it appears to be a software issue. However:

    - I opened up the control panel and sought to see an option that could fix it and nothing.
    - I downloaded the Realtek 64bit hd audio drivers and uninstalled and reinstalled. Did nothing.
    - I got fed up and just decided to reformat the entire laptop. (as you do lol)

^ nothing fixed the issue. Which I am really surprised as a reformat can fix alot. So I am at my wits end right now :) Has anyone got any solutions?

    It's a Compaq cq58 laptop with Windows 8.
I am starting to think it might be an issue with the headphone jack. But it can still recieve audio. Which is the weird thing.

Remove the headphones. Right click the sound icon bottom right and select playback devices. With the playback properties window still open plug in your earphones and a new item should show up. It might show up as Speakers with grey information underneath. Click on it and make default. Should now disable your speakers.

Gonna try that now since I reformatted :)
I tried the same earlier but lets hope it works.

    Nothing.... This is bloody crazy.
How can the headphone jack still recieve audio, but doesnt knock of the speakers when plugged in?

Like if it was a hardware fault with the headphone jack you would expect no sound from it. Which would be cool. But it still sends out audio and I reinstalled the drivers before doing a full system restore

    This is mental.
