Hello I have a Nikon Camera and I was trying to download my holiday photos. They seemed to be importing and I did see them on the screen but now I cannot find them and they have gone form my camera as well.

Did you download the files using the camera software?
If so, open the program and go to settings, you should be able to find the downloaded file location.
