I have a Cisco 3925 from UPC that takes broadband in on a coax connection. The Cisco routers wifi coverage is terrible so i was going to use an older router i have from eircom which had great wifi coverage. Can i use a coax to RJ45 converter and just configure the eircom router with the UPC settings or do i need some type of media converter to get the coax to ethernet?

Thats like asking can I put my motorbike engine in a jumbo jet :pac: DOCSIS and ADSL2+ are totally different and totally incompatible.

With UPC you MUST use a UPC Modem as the modem. Period. If wifi is your issue you can use the old eircom unit in tandem with UPCs and have it act as a wireless access point.

    thanks,

    So if i:

On 2nd router - Disable DHCP, give it an IP on the right range, plug into UPC router? What about SSID and channels etc? Do i then just connect all wifi devices to the new SSID?

I'd kill the Wifi on the UPC box then setup up whatever SSID you want on the eircom box. Then just associate your devices once and you're golden.

What if i kill wifi on UPC and then use the same SSID on eircom box will i have to associate again?

Nope, devices should auth as if nothing happened.

You will need to just enable bridge mode on the EPC3925, then connect in your Eircom to use as it's router - let that handle everything (DHCP, WiFi, Port Forwarding).

Big guide here on setting up Bridge Mode for the Cisco.

Eircom router probabaly wont have a WAN port , only an ADSL port.
Might be possible to assign one of the LAN ports to the WAN VLAN though.

If you can put your cisco box into bridge mode then get one of these....

If your concern is only wifi dont bridge. Needless complication.
