    Hi Guys,

In the market for a new phone and wondering is there a commonly available one in Ireland with an Ant+ radio which can act as a substitute for a Garmin. It would need

    - to have a bicycle mount (so can be viewed while cycling)

And have a preinstalled or easily downloadable application which can

    - Show lap time
    - Pick up wattage from a power meter and be able to at least show current and lap power
    - Show current and lap heartrate
    - Upload activity

    Anybody have one ?

    Thanks Paul.

    samsung galaxy s4/s5 have ant+

the other functionality you then asked about is app dependant. loads of them out there.

...but unfortunately the Strava app doesn't support power meters.

is it the strave app or the ant+ implemention on the phone? they could have chosen some of the profiles to support and not them all.

if it's the app then it's going to be a limitation on any ant+ enabled android phone, but another app might work

if it's a lack of the power profile on the samsung phones it may work on another ant enabled phone

but i'm not aware of any other ant+ enabled phones

Would be quite happy if activity files are accessible on the phone and can be got at via manual upload which is what I tend to currently use with Strava/Golden Cheethah

See with the S5 that you are either talking about 400+ or an expensive 2 year contract:

Anybody have lower end phones working with the setup described above ?

Yes thanks, had a look at that. It does mention a Sony Experia E3 Dual and you have a lower cost Sony Experia E3 here:

Not sure if it is the same phone (no dual in name) with ant+ support.

The quadlock is a great mount for the phone. I've an old S4 which I use instead of a Garmin. I've a bluetooth HRM but need to get a cadence/speed sensor yet.

That looks great, sorts out the mounting, see they have a generic glue system so the bike mount can be used with almost any phone. Did you buy direct from

    http://www.quadlockcase.com/

or is there a European supplier ?

And what ant+ application are you using on the S4 with it ?

    Thanks

Yeah I bought the case direct and deliver via parcel motel,

I'm still using BT for my HRM at the moment so haven't tested Ant+.

Rang local three shop and the Xperia E3 they sell for 129e has a model number of D2203 which is one of the supported models according to:

    http://www.thisisant.com/directory/xperia-e3/

App wise Strava doesn't support ant+ but there seem to be others out there, Garmin Fit may be one of the better ones from a brief lookaround

Runtastic apps support Ant+ I think

Thought I'd give a small update here.

Started using the Sony Xperia E3 on the bike with the Quadlock to record both indoor and outdoor sessions. Still keeping the Edge 705 on the bike until I am fully confident in the system.

Looked at Garmin Fit and MapMyRide but neither record power data.

By far the best application out there which I have found is ipbike:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iforpowell.android.ipbike&hl=en

    and

    http://www.iforpowell.com/cms/

It is highly configurable and therefore comparatively complicated but the variety of power meter and general ant+ data it can return would put Garmin to shame.

Initially I had problems using it outdoors because touch screen functions and Irish winter weather do not go well together. I then discovered you can lock screens and program the phone buttons to do different things on presses, double presses and long presses and this sorts a lot of the usage issues.

When you initially download it, it is free with full functionality. It tracks wheel revolutions and once you reach a million to need to fork out a few euros for the full version. I'm nowhere near a million revolutions yet and this is plenty of time to see if the app is working for you.

Finally it would appear to be a one man show, but the impression I get is he is a very bright guy who has a forum on his website and is very interactive there.

Just add that with ipbike uploading to strava is very easy. Once configured you just hit the upload button after finishing the ride.

With the Edge 705 I need to connect it to my laptop, login in to strava, find the data file and upload.

Endomondo supports ANT+ and you can export the data to Strava

I think the Sony Xperia mini pro supports ANT and is nice and small to suit a bike.

No mention of power meters with endomondo.

Thanks for making me aware of the Xperia x10 mini pro, it could be the perfect phone to use with ipbike

Sorry I misread your first post.

It works with ANT+ Heart rate and cadence, but I don't think power meters are part of it.

Strava will not work on my old HTC desire , but Endomondo does. Thats the only real reason I use the latter. Dont want to take my big expensive Galaxy out on trips. Plus I find Endomondo much more user friendly. But I guess that just a matter of opinion.

All my mates use strava though. None on endomondo. So I export my trips to strava as well.
