Fibre DSL to an extension?

Just had Eircom fibre installed a few days ago which necessitated putting the router at the new master NTU in the hall - not ideal but I reckoned I could live with it for the obvious benefit of better internet.

However it has since become the main target of my two year old who merrily turns off the power or pulls the power lead out. I'm just waiting for him to start applying himself to the DSL lead too.

Unfortunately he can also open doors and seems to be able to get to it in record time.

So I'm going to have to move it if at all possible.

My previous setup had the old router hanging off an extension in the sitting room which was out of sight/reach. The cable running to the extension isn't the best quality but it didn't have any effect on the ADSL signal and only had a very minor increase in attenuation/noise. If necessary I could run some CAT 5e (should be sufficient?) from the NTU to the extension should I encounter any issues.

However the problem is this now appears to be out as the extension is wired off the new faceplate L1&L2 extension connection which is filtered so no DSL.

My question is if there's anywhere on the new NTU that I can connect an extension to have DSL available?

What you want is what eircom refer to as a "Data Point Extension". You can wire a socket off the REAR L1/L2 Terminals and give it "direct access" to the line. Make sure its only used for the modem though. If you can use decent quality cabling then do.

So they wire off the same terminals as the incoming line are connected into or are there additional terminals on the back where they connect into (I haven't had that one off in years)? I'd have thought that might cause issues for line tests etc.?

Shouldnt do, same electrically whether its through the front or the rear. If you wanted you could wired the extension to the front of the socket but it'd look messy and be less toddler proof.

Indeed anything I do needs to be in the wall or it will get pulled at. I had thought they might have terminals to allow for a data extension rather than wiring to the same as the incoming cable. From searches the sockets used in NI/UK seem to have this so was looking to see if that was an option. No worries - I'll tap in there.

call eircom tech support and request a DPE to have the modem moved to a more suitable location
