Leap Card Query - Dublin bus

I have a leap card I use mainly on Dublin bus. I tend to top it up in a shop or at a luas line but I saw an ad for auto-top up which I want to sign up for but had a couple of queries if anyone can help.
    1) Do you need to validate your card like you would if you top up online (I have never used this option as if I'm walking to luas line to validate I may as well just top up there)
    2) I don't use the validator in the bus on the right hand side as my fare is lower than the flat fares. I pay with the driver. Would this be sufficient to validate the top up?

also kind of unrelated to the above
    3) Does the flat fare reduce at different stages i.e. I pick up my bus in the morning and ask the driver for 2.05. If I was going to the end of the route the fare would still be 2.05. Does this mean I can use the validator on the right for the fare, or does it still charge the flat fare?

Not sure about the top up or validating, I'm sure you'd find that info on leap card website, but any time you touch the right hand side validator it charges you the full fare no matter how far or short your journey is,

In answer to number 3, the validator to the right always has a set fare. It never adjusts with the progress of the bus on route.

For 1 and 2, the answers both seem to be yes as far as I can gather. Your card needs to know its been set up for Auto Topup, I "think" Dublin bus machines can give that update, however I'm not particular sure. haven't set it up myself. For auto topup to work, all it needs is for the credit on your card to go below 10 euro while using it, shouldn't matter which device it's with.

Side note on this - I remember hearing that the drivers ticket machine would be receiving auto location updates this eliminating the need for drivers to manually progress the stage. Did this ever come in?

I had hoped that when it did, the rhs validator could benefit from the data and adjust the max fare as the journey progresses..

It would be very handy and it makes sense.

    Thanks for all the replies.

This will be happening in early(ish) 2015.

Well it all depends on what the devices can do. There's been a lot of comments here from drivers mentioning that all the stuff added onto the current equipment for Leap impacts on the usability of their ticket machines.

When you have enabled auto top-up, you need to go to a train station / tram stop / Payzone agent one last time so that the function is loaded onto your card. After that, you only need go near a train station / tram stop / Payzone agent if you spend more in the week than the amount of the auto top-up (let us say you paid for a group of people using your card), as you can only auto top-up once per week.

    Yes.

It would still charge the maximum fare. However, if you are going to hit the daily or weekly cap anyway, feel free to use it.
