Buying my first violin?

    I'm 17 and I would like to take up the violin, I play the guitar and I'm a grade 3 in music theory (as far as I know, I did 3 music theory tests in National school and got distinctions)
    I would like to buy a good violin even if I don't play it I love the look of them and would like a violin to pass through the generations..

    My main issues are;
    1) I don't know what I'm looking for!
    and 2) I don't know whether I'd be better getting a factory made one or should I pay the expense and go to a luther and buy one (not top of the line but still made by a luthier)

    Any help?
    Thanks
