    What's the difference?

The Toshiba is also down to €76.99 and has USB 3.0 but slower run speed but there's only a handful available in the country.

The White Toshiba is €82 and looks to be more widely available than the black.

    What's the difference?

Not entirely sure Fapper, i think it is a 3 year warranty compared to 2 and USB3.0 versus USB2.0?

the toshiba has a slower run speed.
5700 rpm against 7200 rpm on the WD

I've about 4 Seagate Expansion Portables and find them fantastic.

Highly recommended, they are around the same price as the WD's.

Not sure exactly which Seagate your on about but I'm guessing its the 3.5". If so thats not a particularly great price for a 3.5". They are usually a nice bit cheaper than the portables(2.5").

You should get a €5 voucher back too

WD's are far more reliable than Seagate though.

Ah, will ya give over with the scare mongering, data is only as good as the reliable manner in which it is measured and collected. I have a mix of Samsung/Seagate and WD and have 20+hd in operation. Only had 3 failures in my life, ALL were WD.

    Scaremongering? you're a funny guy.

The fact is WD are far more reliable than Seagate. I think i'll take detailed collected statistics over one randomer.

Samsung HDDs are owned by Seagate. They also own Maxtor and LaCie (to name a few).

I've many different brands of HDDs at home. Dumped 1 toshiba, 1 fujitsu, 1 samsung and 3 seagates so far. All the WDs I have still no signs of wear though.

Look at that study parameters instead of pasting in their graphic, who here will parallel their approach? The web is flooded with articles on that so called study under DATA CENTRE environment which no one here will replicate at home. Seagate got 4.4 out of 5 over 2,600 reviews on Amazon versus 4.4 out of 5 WD reviews from Amazon also.
Seriously if you believe Seagate has a 15% failure rate then I have a buddy from Nigeria who wants to contact you on a lottery win. 'Debate' over, I'll be picking up my Seagate in the morning thank you very much.

Just picked up one from Tralee and got the Ultra! So I have USB 3.0. Slightly odd shape compared to my other drives, its a few mil shorter in length but slighter higher. Very happy with it!!

Got ultra too in Stephens green, also used the €20 I got back from the kindle, delighted

i got seagate . the portable one, because desktop version is 3'5 drive and requires extra power supply, while portable is standard laptop drive( didnt dismantle my one due to warranty and stuff) according to youtube.plus it came with 5$ argos voucher.
i believe its best (cheapest) you could get 2tb 2'5 drive atm.

Have you actually read the thread before posting?
The Toshiba and WD 2TB are on special for €76.99 in Argos. The equivalent 2TB Seagate is €95.99 in Argos. All are portable(2.5") but that doesnt necessarily mean you can open them up and use the drive in a laptop. Cases vary with different makes.

If you have already reserved the WD at Argos it at 76.99 for pick up Thursday and have a printed email to show it, do they have to honour that price considering it is now over 100 euro?

I have one reserved until the end of today at queens old castle Cork but didn't have enough cash yesterday. I checked the cat. no. and it's the current ultra in the catalogue.

pm me if anyones wants the reservation no.

I'm nearly sure it said the price was valid until 6/12. I ordered it in for collection tomorrow and remember thinking to myself that's grand it'll still be that price and I'll get the voucher (which also finishes on 6th).

    Can anyone confirm?

I reserved one last night for Waterford. Printed the reservation when I saw the price had gone back up (although I'm also sure that last night it said price valid til 6th). I just said to the girl on the til that today's price was higher than when I reserved and she just said "no problem I can override that". No questions asked. Got the ultra version too.

Great to hear that i can still get the WD for 77 if i bring in the email with that price on it. Those who got it, how are ye finding it in terms of performance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,060 ✭✭✭tvercetti

I have a spare reservation for Killarney. I accidentally reserved it there instead of Tralee(ended up getting it in Tralee). I rang yesterday to extend the reservation and they extended it until Wednesday the 10th. Drop me a PM if interested and I can forward on the Email.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,601 ✭✭✭cerastes

I managed to book one yesterday (WD 2Tb portable), I was nearly going to get anyone of the other drives as I need a spare and was looking out for one, have a WD and hopefully it will hold out but a portable one would be handy/ier.
Bit concerned about the seagate ones as Id read reviews before, but that may be more for heavier users.
I am sure Id read good reviews of Hitachi reliability regarding external drives (although that probably means any Hitachi drive).

Argos, gave me a date, but it said nothing in the follow up text, except that they will contact me when it arrives.

Had you reserved the "Ultra" one? My reservation is for the standard one (difference is doesn't have USB 3 .......I think?)

No I reserved the standard one linked in this thread. Details on the site only mention usb2, but the one I was given for 76.99 said Ultra on the box and has usb3.
