Career Dilemma-Getting back to my old role

Had a career in a fairly niche area back in the boom times, and had a successful career at it before a combination of technological changes coupled with the downturn meant my role was made redundant.
For the last four years I’ve worked in fairly mundane administrative roles from where I tried to find my way back into an area somewhat related to my ‘boomtime’ career, as I have the skills/qualifications in that area.
However, I have been unsuccessful, and at interviews etc, people have said ‘you are over-qualified for the role you are currently in’ or words to that effect, and didn’t really get the fact that I was in their organisation, at that level, at that time, in order to get into a role within that same organisation which matched my skills/what I want to work at. Even though they say my previous employment history and qualifications in that area on my CV, they just seemed to see my current job on my CV.
Now, obviously, unfortunately the demand for jobs doesn’t meet the number of jobs in this country, and I’m half thinking of doing what I probably should have done from day one, four and a bit years ago, and taken the plane out of here and tried to get work in the area in which I have skills in.
Anyhow, how do I go about explaining the reason I’ve had the jobs I’ve had since the ‘crash’, have been with a view to getting back into my original career? IE, Thinking being an employee with relevant skills/experiences would perhaps lead on a path back to my initial career area.
Or, after four and a bit years out will prospective employers just see my qualifications/pre-2010 experience as being out of date?
The other issue I’m having is that jobs in my chosen field in this country have become the preserve of Scambridge/and I’m wondering is ageism coming into it, IE employers may prefer a 21 year old graduate to mid-thirties year old?
    Any general advice?
My options, are do more of the same in terms of what I'm doing job wise, which isn't working out, secondly, emigrate or thirdly go back and retrain which is something I don't want to do after six odd years in full-time education. Cheers

I think that the reality is that anyone who expects to work successfully in any job relating to technology needs to be upskilling on an ongoing basis.

there are huge option in part time and online training and you will need to demonstrate that you are up to date in any interview because others will.
