Yes. Bad ones are very bad.

I know several people with them, or their clones. Seen a couple of gearbox's and 2 with dodgy injectors, 1 of which has done 30k without getting repaired and still going fairly well, though a little tappy.
Probably better vans out there but for the price they are good. Should be plenty of choice out there so shouldn't be hard find a clean one.
I also seen them on watchdog the other night because of injectors getting stuck in the block due to water leaking down and rusting them, could be costly if it happens.

I have a 08 Renault Trafic and its a great van. I can get about 1000km out of a tank of diesel. The only major iv had is the air flow meter needed replacing but other than that it's just the usual servicing that needs to be done to it.

Gearboxes on early ones are made of chocolate.

The earlier ones were hard on gearboxes. I'm guessing the one your looking at is around 2002-2004. Great van if minded but wouldn't take abuse great and finding a clean one at that age is difficult. Other than the gearboxes I think there was some stuff that gave trouble on the engines I'm sure someone will give more exact components.

Would be out of my price range thou. Would the older models be as good on juice?

I'm not a transit fan. But in terms of getting a cheap van the transit connect in general would probably better overall than an early 02-05 vivaro. As the connect will take more abuse and is cheaper/ easier to fix. As was said before they are hard enough on diesel but for your budget you can't have it everyway and the connect will probably be the best option. Not necessarily that particular van you were looking at but just in general.

Clean decent Vans are just hard to find but if you look enough you'll find one.

They can be fine but it's considered the 07+ is far better but prices reflect

I have an 08 trafic which is a clone of the vivaro. I'd gladly sell it tomorrow if I hadn't a conscience.
The only advantage to it is it's very comfortable to drive and has loads of power.
In the last 12 months I've done 2 injectors. A window switch and motor, links, bushes, power steering pump, ball joints just off the top of my head. Their a pig on diesel very hard to get 30 mpg and mine never had a towbar and it never carries a lot of weight

I carry weight and have a heavy foot with 90% of my driving is town and I get a consistent 33 mpg. More wrong with yours I'd say.

I find them abit better than the transits and a hell of alot better than hiaces

I've an 05 Trafic. I love it. Bought it is August 13 with 121 K Km, its now on 155 k KM, so i don't do mad mileage.

I've had a starter go faulty and a new battery due to wiring getting worn through near the gearbox (€500), an alternator recon (€230) and a gearbox recon and new clutch (€1100) and a new MAF and an EGR clean (€320).

So it has not been without it's issues but I am happy with it. Very comforatble drive, plenty of poke for my purposes and averages 35mpg - that is based on actual mileage vs diesel bought.

I would definitly buy another one, but as I pay private tax on it and post 2008 that would be astronomical I reckon I'll be keeping this one going for a long time to come.

A few friends have them too, one 2006 one is having issues at the moment with a stuck injector.
