    TechRadar review HERE

No trees were harmed in the posting of this message, however a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Pretty much the same as the Dell Inspiron that hovers from 199-249.

    Celeron N2820
    4Gb Ram
    320Gb Hard Drive
    1366x768
    Win8

Can't find any fault whatsoever with a 15.6" laptop for 199 in to be fair.

fine as a internet machine for normal browsing.

It's grand for what it is. Just don't be expecting to do anything intensive using it. For anyone who needs a basic laptop for using the internet, replying to emails, watching videos etc. It'll do the job.

    Great price on it!

Yeah quite similar but tesco one has a dvd drive, dell doesn't and it has a lan port as well.

    For 199 it's deadly.

Anyone know if this is in Dublin stores as well? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭SimonLynch

If it's not on display ask for it. All the bargains from last year's after Christmas Day sale were wholesale abused. First through the door and I had to work to get the laptop I'm typing this on.

Would It be handy for the parents? inc Skype as they were put off by the price tags of 300-500 for a laptop with unwanted software they'd be bundled with also.

    Thanks.

That would be fine for basic internet browsing, just dont expect to be doing any gaming on it.

Yep, it'll run Skype fine. The integrated webcam won't take the best video & the weak WiFi signal might mean the router needs to be kept nearby, but it'll work grand.

This is primarily who this laptop is aimed at, people who need a computer for occasional use.

Did anyone get one of these?
I was looking at one too for an Xmas present. I require something for internet browsing, mostly. No gaming :)

I would like to know more about their technical support and where the item is shipped to be repaired in case something is wrong? thanks

Would these be good if you got a good portable hard drive

I went looking for one yesterday in the Square, Tallaght, but they were gone.

Consensus seems to be good for basic internet surfing etc. If I loaded Microsoft Office onto it (or just word and Excel) would it run ok? Spreadsheets would be very basic

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 353 ✭✭discodiva92

Was thinking the same has it word and excel

It will not have them. you will have to get word and Excel separately. I am just wondering does it have enough RAM to run them

Your phone probably has enough ram to run them. So yes.

It may actually have them, I notice that most new laptops are coming pre loaded with office these days, you just need to buy the licence key separately.

You get a 30-day trial. But OpenOffice will do everything you need for free, and has become a lot more compatible than it used to be with the paid MS stuff.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I wouldn't even bother with OpenOffice, I found it terribly slow (on my pimped out gaming PC) and simply not as good as the MS equivalents (to say nothing of the compatibility issues I had 100% of the time whenever I tried to send things to clients). However, Google Docs which is just as free as Open Office and has the added bonus of being cloud based so data loss isn't a concern and compatibility hasn't, so far, been a problem for me.

I was telling my neighbour about this as he has a neice who works in Tesco, she didnt have any in her store, but said she heard they were going for €99 in Superstores in Portlaoise etc.

I rang Letterkenny, they've now gone upto €279 & have 4GB RAM & 350GB of storage, that's what i was told, as that seems good anyway.

Ok, that makes sense. There was 4Home Superstores, a branch, in Portlaoise but it closed down in 2009. There's also a single site shop called Superstores but clearly they meant tesco Extra.

Thanks. Must keep an eye out in Tullamore and Portlaoise.

Is the screen and keyboard any good? Usually thats the weak spots on a cheap laptop for me.

If anyone sees it at €99, let us know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,175 ✭✭✭angeldelight

The Tesco in Maynooth is an Extra and it was definitely €199 in there, I saw the display the other night so I don't think it's €99 anywhere! Also someone I work with bought one in Clarehall, another Extra for €199

I was tempted to buy one for the kids for gaming, I got one of the staff to go online with the laptop but according to systemrequirementslab.com The Sims 4 wont work on it....

Don't buy a laptop for gaming, especially a cheap one. Have a word with the lads in the PC Building and Upgrading forum they'll sort you something out.

Stick on a decent lightweight Linux distro (XCFE Mint 17 for example) and this would be a fine (and not slow) budget computer.
