    Hi guys,

I need some suggestions on an SSD for my laptop. Should I go msata or replace the the current drive. Also what are the pros and cons for each option.

    Thanks,

I don't know what you're current setup is. I'm assuming you have regular 2.5" SATA hdd in place. You can also fit a mSATA simultaneously. Loads of threads on the interwebs. mSATA port is under the keyboard.

Use the mSATA SSD for your OS and programs. Use the old HDD for storage and/or virtual machines. If you've windows 8/8.1,the hyper-v role is built in and you can run VMs from here very easily. You might save a few quid (negligible) by getting a 2.5" SATA hdd instead of an mSATA one.

Yes I currently have the 2.5 SATA HDD installed. So, to get the best of both worlds, keep the 2.5 Sata HDD and purchase an mstata SSD.

Any advice on transferring the O/S

Yup, might as well keep the original HDD in place.

If you grab a samsung 840. You'll get a disk with this software: Samsung Data Migration

Its piss easy to do and you don't need to know any HDD/partition wizardry to figure it out. Here's a 120GB model for you. You could go for a larger option too. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-250GB-mSATA-Solid-State/dp/B00HFD9C5O/

One caveat however. I was looking into this a moment ago. The mSATA port only runs at SATA II speeds. This means that you will not max out the read/write speeds of the SSD (SATA III). You will still have a massive increase in performance over your HDD. If you wanted to get max performance of an SSD, you'd need a 2.5" SATA type and replace the HDD with it. The regular SATA port is SATA III.

Unless you drastically needed that extra 150MB/sec or so, I believe the mSATA SSD will do a fine job.

Here's a benchmark of the mSATA port on Lenovo's forum from this thread:

Interesting find on the lenovo forum. I was under the impression that the mStata port was actually Sata 3.

Either way, this is not a deal breaker for me. I'm going with the Samsung 120gb mSata.

    Thank you for the advice!
