We are Mayo and in the process of a build and want to use certified passive house windows and bi fold door for patio. We were going with a large supplier in the south who manufacture certified product and told us there is a new triple glaze bifold door on market. A local supplier has come in on the mix and says he can offer passive products also. We are confused as to what we should be asking for and installation expertise is important. Any suggestions PMs welcome.

In my experience your architect should be advising you and reviewing the passive house certificates . Installation is all about the details, they need to be prepared at an early stage for main contractor pricing and then fine tuned and countersigned along with approved shop drawings prior to manufacture & install.

What appears to be happening is that the word passive house is used loosely these days as no supplier wants to loose out on business. If you want to ensure that the windows are passive house certified just ask for the "passive house certificate" for those windows/doors or look up the passive house database at passiv.de/komponentendatenbank/en-EN and you can see what a certificate looks like. (add the www to the above )

A passive house certified window just means that it has been independently verified to do what it says it can do from an energy perspective. It does not mean that it is structurally sound or will keep out water (although I would say you can expect it to do this).

You are correct about the installation detail of any window/door -there are two factors to consider- An installation detail (drawing) to show how it will fit into your wall construction and getting a fitting crew that are able to do it (try get the best crew before placing an order).

Another factor that you may be able to control that will ensure that you do not loose too much internal heat or gain too much solar energy is the glass. There are two important values Ug and g . Ug (values around 0.6 W/(m²K))- this keeps the heat in when you heat the house and g is how much solar heat can pass through the glass from the outside -if this is too high and you have little shading for the south or west you may overheat in the summer.

    Regards,
    Seamus
