Morphine just stopped working! How?

I just started taking Oramorph 10 days ago. It is for chronic pain, resulting from a slipped disc, or discs in my spine. I have been through a number of different medications, all with little, or no benefit until I was given Oramorph in Accident & Emergency after a collapse. I felt some relief and most of the pain went, which was great. So, 10 days later, I am taking it every 4-5 hours and today, it has just stopped working.

My GP said that it is normal to become tolerant of morphine, but 10 days cannot be normal. Could it? I was only taking irregular doses at first and in the past couple of days I had to increase the frequency to what was recommended by my GP. That dose and frequency is not working and I am afraid to increase the dose, or frequency for obvious reasons, so I will not do that without GP saying so. Is it normal to become tolerant so quickly? I'm losing my mind at this stage! All I am getting now is some side effects (nothing serious, some nausea and mild itch around my navel).
