personal/social/business cards - your thoughts

I've been reading some articles, and talking with friends about the use of informal business cards, and now I'd like to hear some thoughts from boards.ie community.

People use business cards for professional reasons, what about when you're out, enjoying some social life, and you meet some people that you would like to getting in contact afterwards. You ask the number, or you add s/he in Facebook (or any other social network - assuming that person has a social network account), or do you right it down in a paper, or maybe like I've seen dozens of time, you use the Metro newspaper, to send a message to that person to get in touch with you?

Long story short, what's your view on informal/personal/social business cards?

    Business cards, maybe.

For personal use, I'd immediately label the person who gave it to me as 'Twat'. Just swap numbers or facebook ffs.

That made me smile! There's no way I could hand out a card with my social media details on it, I'd feel like too much of a twat.

If someone gave me a "social card" I'd burn it in front of them. Business card sure, many of us carry them, but a social card wtf..

Just write it down/punch into phone.

Also, if I have just met you I won't add you to my facebook friends list.

From experience some kind of business card is essential at least in b to b environment. And cards for personal use are essential for other people to know who to avoid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,383 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

As long as the card said your name followed by = Twat, I see no harm in it.

I would like to give my total approval to the other posters who have stated that only a TWATwould do this.

10 or 20 years ago it made sense, now we all have mobiles.

I got 500 cards online a while back, forget exactly how much they cost but it wasn't a lot.

I carry about 20 with me on a night out and hand them out to women - they have my picture, mobile number, email and Facebook profile address on them.

You need to add farming mod.

Then carry around a mod hat. Maybe a mop or some tissue.

They are very cumbersome. Not sure how he would manage that and not be confused for a floor cleaner.

Farmers don't know what health and safety is so that would seem wrong

You give out your info to 20 random people regularly?

    uh ...nice.

Don't you worry that one of them might be you know ...a nut job?

There are now potentially lots of people with your info. That doesn't sound.. well safe.

And I would think it was well. Odd. And sleazy.

Actually no now that i think of it I would assume you were trying to sell me something.

Get some business cards made up that make you look like a high roller in a big company.

Then you can do the whole "I'll put my personal number on the back" when you chat up da laydees.

I always had a preconception that people who do such a thing would be odd. Then one day a man I'd never met before swept over all Milk Tray Man-esque and gave me his card.

His opening line "Well you're no viking..." and he continued on to tell me that with my colouring I would most certainly be of Norman decent,a history lesson ensued.

My worst suspicions about people with personal cards were confirmed.

OP don't do it, people will cringe for you and then throw your card away.

Have to agree... think it's such a poncey idea. But hey let's be honest, it will most likely happen. Alot of people are just mad into social media.
Beyond a person's phone number they can have accounts with facebook, twitter, whats app, instagram, skype, gmail (google hangouts / profiles) and the list can go on....

Of course this is going to happen. There are people out there who wear fake glasses for the sake of wearing glasses :pac: So "personal cards" ? you better believe it lol.

Be assured, I don't want to create or use this type of cards, but I do enjoy the replies :)
