Just seen this this morning on the way to work............WTF?

I've heard of it on Stephens Day before but now its on "Black Friday" too, I've seen people queuing with fold up chairs outside Footlocker, God knows how long they've been there. I can never imagine queuing for anything.

What do you think of queuing outside shops for a sale?
Would you queue outside a shop?

Never have and frankly I couldn't see myself doing it. It's undignified.

Is that what was going on this morning in town? I was wondering why the traffic was heavier and there was more people in around town at 6am this morning.. Madness

It's an imitation of some American nonsense, isn't it?

Consumerism at it's finest, going to great lengths to buy a pile of ****e you don't really need, with money you don't really have

Suppose you have to occupy your mornings somehow when you don't need to work for a living.

Queued overnight for tickets for slane one year, but that's allowed :):):)
queuing outside a shop for a sale is just ridiculous! Although, I don't think there's ever been anything that I've ever wanted that badly. .

I know it's madness lads I agree with you. Have you ever heard of shift workers though? You may be right, it may be unemployed people as well

Would never do it unless there was a deal on a >65" TV for like €250...but then the chances of actually getting it without queueing up for 24 hours would be pretty much impossible so ya, I wouldn't be doing it. Shopping in normal conditions is bad enough as it is

Soon enough we'll lose the privilege of being able to mock the Americans for their consumerism, shame on us!

Aren't most of these deals available online as well, though?

This is it, really. Buy a pair of shoes that otherwise you would never have bought, just because they're cheaper than usual.

If a pair of shoes usually cost 400 euro and now cost 250 euro it doesn't mean you have saved 150 euro - you have still spent 250 euro.

Some of the quotes from the article below are just comical:
    http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/nov/28/black-friday-sales-police-attend-supermarkets-amid-scuffles
Frustrated with not being able to buy a Blaupunkt 40” TV reduced from £299.99 to £149.99, Haggerty rushed to pick up a Dyson Animal Vac, down from £319.99 to £159.99. “I don’t even know how much it costs, I don’t know even know if I’m going to buy it. I just wanted something,” she said. “There are lads in there three, four, five tellies. It’s not fair.”

One of those lads was Andy Blackett, 30, an estate agent, who had two trolleys full of bargains. “I got two coffee makers, two tablets, two TVs and a stereo,” he said. “I couldn’t tell you the prices, but I know they’re bargains.”

But his mate Henry Fischer, a 19-year-old student, wasn’t as successful. “Someone snatched my telly from me – it’s cos I’m the smaller one.”

Someone snatched something from someone else.

What age do they think they are?

    Jeeeez.

    Bargain alerts FTW.

    I reckon they love it.
The same people's social media pages are probably flooded with pics and comments of their days successful bargains.
It's like they're doing it just to tell others!

Wouldn't do it myself but you can kinda understand if people are going to save a load of money or get limited items.

Definitely not as bad as the mongos that do stuff like head up to Belfast to get iPhones the day they're released.

I've seen people queue outside Aldi/Lidl on Thurs. and Sun. mornings to avail of their special offers and bargains, so it doesn't surprise me. I hate queuing. Patience isn't always a virtue.

The only time patience is a virtue is when your waiting for herself to get ready

Oh, of course. Or workers that took the morning or day off, retired persons, people on holiday, etc.

I'd still wager all these types will be outnumbered by those on the dole.

That's slightly different, as you usually know exactly what you want before you go and queue.
I'll admit do doing this once before.
However, a huge majority of the 'Black Friday sheep' tend to just queue in the hope of a massive bargain, or bargains, that they're not sure exactly what until they get their hands on it!

Must be the endorphin-rush from shopping that drives them...

Wow, imagine queuing outside a shop before it opens. How sad is that.
Lets just be clear.......QUEUING OUTSIDE A SHOP. What's gone wrong in your life that you need to do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Seen a video on Facebook of people actually in a brawl in Tesco over items in England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,089 ✭✭✭✭P. Breathnach

It makes them happy and it does me no harm. That's okay.

There is a filtering mechanism: people who do have a job to go to are less likely to make the time for queuing like that, so it gives people on SW, student grants, or pensions a chance to get a nice bit of kit at the sort of prices that they can afford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,597 ✭✭✭dan1895

Great tradition to start copying and to encourage seeing as Black Friday in the States leads to brawls, crushes and the odd murder.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,396 ✭✭✭Frosty McSnowballs

I don't see the harm in it, that's if the person that is queuing for something they would have bought at full price anyway. Sure, if they get a few quid off then great.

I can't believe there are people in here giving out about people queuing in the hope of even getting a small bargain. Immediately coming to the conclusion that they are on the dole, so what if they are anyway. Get fcuked.

Personally, there's nothing I want enough that would warrant me queuing up.

I only queue for Jesus bread in Mass, that's it.

It's logical and reasonable to assume that if so many people can devote the entire morning of a work day to an ultimately frivolous pursuit a large proportion of those people will not be working for a living.

Either way, telling people to get fcuked from a safe vantage is neither witty or brave.

Maybe while they're all standing there someone could ask them if they're paying their property tax and water charges!
This Christmas consumerism is gone daft. Its still November. Saw the 2014 edition of The Cork Holly Bough for sale yesterday. Thats just wrong.

We and the brits used to take the piss out of Americans going crazy in a store grabbing stuff like lunatics.

Its amazing how people get so easily led by a imported marketing gimmick.

All I'd say is it may be a "work day" for you but I work weekends I work nights and days all 12 hour shifts so anytime day or night 7 days a week could be my "work day" or my time off so you can't say that because they are there on a Friday they don't work today I happen to be off for example but I would in my arse que up at that ha

Witty or brave? Damn, that's what I was going for! If those two words "get" and "fcuked" have annoyed you, then I pity you. People love "ultimate frivolous pursuits"...it's the run up to Christmas. People buy stuff for themselves and people they love. Who gives a fcuk when they do it. It's logical at this time of year for people to bargain hunt. I suppose you have a problem with that do ya?

It is very possible they are unemployed. Why don't you go out there and conduct a survey? Let's see how brave and witty you are face to face with the people you are looking down on. Or would you rather continue to make ill informed assumptions from a safe vantage point?

How dare unemployed people leave their house!

Happy Friday, Seasons Greetings, Bah Humbug and have a greeeaaaat day Deadhand!

Big kiss, little kiss, big kiss, hug.
