Black Friday

Quick question (and this is the best place to ask it as I'm currently not in Ireland) - bit I'm told Black Friday is catching on in Ireland - is it?

Seems bit hypocritical to denounce Americans as ignorant, hyper-capitalists and then to camp outside an electrical store for a cheap TV in Blacnh or Liffe Valley!

All I can hope is that guns are still banned back there...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yeah its spread across the water. The UK retail sites are all over it, the high streets here are doing Black Friday deals, it was even on the Six One.
Not sure if we'll see brawls and shootings though. We can only hope.

I dunno. I don't think the 8th of December is a Friday this year.

Yeah, that's what I'd heard. Bloody sheep.

Berlin's probably the last place you'd expect it to catch on, to be fair. It's not really gone in for consumerism.

Get rid of all thes pre christhmas sales , just one Xmas sale on the 27th December with 30to 50 percent off , you knew that was a genuine deal/ bargain , it's about 10 yrs since things were like that , theres no transparency about prices now, it's abit like those ads for sofas and mattresses with 50% off every 2nd week ,when in fact they never ever sold one at normal price, also the stores need to get rid of the "up to 50 %" off catch lines , when you arrive it's 40 % of the good stiff and 10 % off the ****e or 'this stock not in sale/ new season" , it's all the stock or nothing! you listening brown thomas and arnotts !

It exists but as I said in another thread, it is crap.

In the US there are some actual deals to be had. Here it is stuff that they would have been lowering the price off in a few weeks anyway. Want a laptop or TV? We got a great offer on the last 3 we have in stock from 3 years ago.

If you are lucky they will bring prices down to how much they cost from the likes of amazon.

Imagine gunning down a man in broad daylight and spending the rest of your life in prison for a television. It would be some way to end up eh?

I absolutely hate stupid bits of American culture creeping into Britain. I've seen a few statuses on facebook in the past few hours about van-loads of police having to control crowds at shops. For fcuk sake.

You talking about the enti-english people who spend hundreds on english football clubs every year? That sort of people?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

Black Friday encapsulates everything that is bad about America.

I'm in Vegas for black Friday. Some of the shops here opened an hour ago, 6PM, to go through all night. I had planned to to my shopping now but I got pissed so I'll get up at 3am like I always used to and do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭Arbiter of Good Taste

I don't understand the obsession with parroting the U.S. fine, kick off the Xmas shopping period, but why does it have to be called Black Friday? Can we not have our own identity?

Considering the fights last week over Frozen dolls, I won't be surprised if we see a stabbing or two in the coming years.

Its a load of ****e here, just riding on the idea that its great when actually all the good deals go in seconds and the rest is ****.

Haven't heard about sales outside football grounds, but as far as I know that isn't even common in the US, is it?

So, police called to stores in various parts fo the UK, it looks like we're on our way. Oh, joy. At least no-one's been killed, but I wonder for how long we'll be able to say that?

Hold stores responsible I say. Aren't you at least partially repsosible for the safety of people in your store? Would love to see what effect it would have on their public liability insurance.

I assume most ppl don't need to be told to avoid the daily mail. they have a headline saying "You must buy a bargain this weekend"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

In America though most folk take today off so it's like a Bank Holiday Sale, the concept doesn't work here as everyone is sat at work and unable to get to the stores.
Most of it is junk anyway, Asda selling a Polaroid tv for £129... Polaroid FFS would you be well.

Lads in work were in the tesco in Salford last night. All builders who would be able to look after themselves and they said they were almost scared at the viciousness of people. The lady working for tesco was trampled by the crowds.

So, you will only consider the purchase of a bargain based on an odd xenophobic hostility?

What if I told you that January sales were also an american creation?

It's not 'xenophobic', just why do the uk and Irl have to copy everything they do?

If people want to spend, let them on.

Not sure why it requires hostility to a nation.

As I said, seasonal discounts at any time of year is an imported concept.
I assume your hostile toward all their originating countries?

Its to get good deals on stuff before Christmas i think its great. Its more a novelty here but still good to get the odd bargain. People who say its Americanized Culture then turn off your TV stop listening to music etc. Those Yanks also kicked off the internet your using now? Takes me back to my primary school days the teacher would hand us empty jacks rolls and some cotton wool for a beard and hey presto off home with a ****ty Santa(pun not intended) to show the parents for the Christmas hols. Its 2014 now:rolleyes:
