Foundation: Would primer have prevented this?

I have pretty good skin which doesn't need much coverage, however, in photos of nights out I've noticed that after a while my foundation would seem to fade and and would look very undone.

I bought the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation and when I put it on it looked good, but when I came home after a night out, I was horrified to notice it sank into loads of tiny line lines I didn't even know were there, and looked really dry! I'd used moisturiser, put on the foundation, followed by MAC Skinfinish power and a bit of bronzer & blusher.

I've never used primer before and not really sure what they're meant to do, but would a primer have prevented this from happening? I've been afraid to used the Double Wear since :o

I've noticed that when I'm drinking lots of water every day that my make up looks great on nights out, and stays looking great.

No shine or need to reapply.

So maybe regularly drinking lots of water (2 litres) every day would prevent it

A primer would probably help that issue, because the silicones kind of fill in any fine lines so your foundation won't sink into them. Also they tend to make your foundation last longer too. I like the Smashbox Photofinish Primer but it's pretty expensive. Clarins also do a good one that's a little cheaper.

Estée Lauder Double Wear is a very heavy foundation; if your skin is pretty good then you really don't need that much coverage. It can look cakey as well. Maybe something like the Double Wear Light might be better; it has sheerer coverage but should last as well as the original.

Try mixing Double Wear with some moisturiser, it is very heavy! That said I use Double Wear and always wear primer with it (Smashbox). I only use a tiny bit of it though, that's all you need.

You might be putting on too much make-up!

If you've got good skin which needs minimal coverage, I don't know why you're using Double Wear. As Illyana has said - the light version would suit you better.

Also, how are you applying it? Stipple brush all the way for foundation application, imo. :)

I used double wear with primer and had the same issue tbh

I possibly was using too much of it, as I do remember it was amazing at covering a couple of spots I had.

I'd guess your using too much, you don't want to go heavy with it cause it won't move so will look cakey!

DoubleWear is only heavy if you've applied too much.

I'm using it five years now and if you've moisturised your skin, leave it to dry for three-four minutes and then apply a dab of foundation on cheeks, forehead, chin and even less on the nose.

You'll find, because your skin has been freshly moisturised, the foundation will glide across your face meaning you don't need loads of it.

I then brush some blusher on my cheeks straight away which gives a flawless finish.

Note: My mother, who's in her fifties, felt DoubleWear Light was better for her. So depending on your age group, maybe you'd prefer that?
