I have Runkeeper and have a few buddies on it but I've heard quite a few people mention Strava. What are people's opinions, is one better than the other?

Neither. Focus on recovering from your injury, and then after that focus on the big things like training consistently, improving your core strength, learning to run by feel etc, rather than the expensive little things which are not going to make you a better runner anytime soon. A simple stopwatch will do for now.

...or just use Strava. It's really good. Great interface and loads of other functions too. Plus you get kudos for your runs and everybody loves a little appreciation every now and then.

Strava for me - great resource to compliment your training AND you can still focus on recovering from your injury, and focus on the big things like training consistently, improving your core strength, learning to run by feel etc, as its a free website/app that you would be crazy to think that it would make you a better runner anytime soon and make a gps enabled stop watch more interesting

Don't know runkeeper at all, but Strava has some nice features like 'segments' where parts of your run routes are compared against other people covering the same ground, and you end up with a kind of competition and a leader board. Like a race, but you're all running at different times.

That sounds good, I've downloaded the free version of Strava to see what it's like. I only know 6 people on it so far.

I've been using Runkeeper as a way of keeping a record of my progress and keeping an eye on my buddies too. I know it's not going to make me a better runner, I don't think anyone claimed that's what these apps do.

There's a boards club on strava worth joining, a few familiar faces there:

Cheers, I just joined, it'll be nice to see what everyone is up to and I might even get trying some of the same routes.

can you move data from one to the other?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

You can set up a synch from other back-ends to Strava. If you search for Strava on this forum, you will get further details. I used tapiriik, which supports multidirecitonal synching. You can also do a 'mass export' from Strava, which is dead handy for backups, or moving from an online system to offline.

    <waits for mass jokes>

That's class, I synced them so all my Runkeeper info is on Strava now. My regular run, or a slightly shorter version of it, has been done 26 times by people. My best pace for it should put me 2nd, once I'm back to fitness I'll be pushing for 1st, I'm looking forward to that.

Strava definitely looks better than Runkeeper.

At first used Runkeeper but once found Strava haven't turned back. Strava definitely a more polished service. Yes, its more aimed at cycling but perfect for running also and best of all its free! There is a paid option but only of interest if you are looking for a deeper breakdown of your data.

I just discovered that I'm actually 1st on one of the local segments already, go me!!!!!

I like the way it shows records for 400m and 1 mile. All of mine were done as part of longer runs but they're pretty poor. That's something that needs to be rectified.

Has anyone else had trouble syncing via Tapiriik recently? I haven't been able to upload from Garmin onto Strava in around 4 days.

I only have Runkeeper and Strava on it and they're syncing perfectly.

You don't need to use Tapirik any more. You can synch activities directly between the two environments without using a third-party tool. IIRC, the option is somewhere in your Strava profile.

I can link Strava to Myfitnesspal that way but but not to Runkeeper.

Yeah, I was addressing ArtieFufkin's question. And just to add, the way to create the automatic link between Strava and Garmin Connect is to:
    1. From strava Click on Upload Activity (top-right)
    2. Choose the Garmin option
    3. Choose the synchronize Garmin connect option

Thanks KC! I managed to sort out the original problem, but it is even better to know about the facility on Strava. I'm rarely on the PC version, so have missed out on this up until now.

I use endomono, anything in these apps that are different? I find it great anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭ArtieFufkin

I used Endomondo for a long time when I took my phone running. AFAIK it is one of the better apps and I really liked it at the time. The thing that is better with Strava are the segments and social aspect. You can check your times against other athletes on the same segments, follow other runners and joins clubs- such as the Boards one. If you are really serious and don't have a Garmin you can upgrade to reveal some quite in depth stats on your performance.

The Garmin interface is a total joke but you have to use it if you have one of their products.

I wonder could they add in top speed?

Loved Runkeeper when I first got back running but got myself a Garmin and uploaded all my old runs to Strava. None of of friends use Starva but I'm loving it I find it far superior.

I wonder why neither of them do an iPad version of the app :confused:

Probably because the full versions work perfectly well on iPad, as do the iPhone versions. :)
